Be it known that I, AUGUST L. LUCAS, a citizen of the United States, residing` in the city and county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and uselul Improvements in Combination-Tools, oi 4which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates `to a combination tool of the geometrical instrument type, and more particularly to an instrument designed to be used by draitsmen in drawing straight and curved lines, although it will be apparent that this invention is well adaptedV for other uses. j
vThe invention herein disclosed relates particularly to improvements in the tool which forms the subject matter of my Patent, No. 1,160,920, granted November 16, 1915.
One object of my invention is to provide an instrument of the type above indicated, having an arm with a blade slidably mounted thereupon, and to provide interengaging means between the arm and blade to accurately position and retain the latter in any one of a plurality of positions longitudinally of. said arm.
Another object of my invention is to provide graduated means whereby the blade pivotally mounted upon the arm may be `accurately adjusted to any desired angle relatively to said arm.
To these and other ends the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

1n the embodiment of my invention, which l have illustrated in the drawing, 1 have designated by the numeral 10 a head or base member having a graduated arm or straight edge 11 pivotally secured thereto by means of a screw or bolt 12. The head 10 is preferably provided with graduations 13,
which are positioned to cooperate with a pointer 14C formed upon the pivoted end of the arm 11. The arm 11 may be clamped in any desired angular adjustment relative to the head 10 by means of the clamping screw 15. lf desired, the head 10 may be provided with levels 16 positioned in openings formed in this head. The pivoted arm 11 has a slot 17 formed longitudinally thereof adapted to receive a sliding bolt 18, which bolt is provided to secure the blade 19 to the arm 11 in any desired position of adjustment, the blade 19 bei-ng provided with a slot 2O through which the bolt 18 passes in order that the blade 19 may be adjusted both longitudinally and transversely of the arm 11. In order that the blade 19 may be pivotally secured to the bolt 18, so that the same may be swung about this bolt as a pivot, without being accidentally moved lengthwise, l provide the clamping element 21, which element is preferably provided with a dislrlile portion having a drill-hole formed therethrough to pivotally receive the bolt 18 and is provided with a radially projecting ear or the like 22, the object of which will be hereinafter described. The arm 11 preferably has a relatively wide groove 23 formed in its rear face, as shown in Fig. a of the drawing, in which groove is slidably mounted a substantially rectangular plate 211, which is rigidly secured to the rear end of the pivot `bolt 18, the arrangement being such that the bolt 18 may be reelyslid longitudinally ot the arm 11 within the slot 17, but is prevented from rotating therein by the member 24; rigidly secured to theirear end of this bolt. The blade 19 is provided with a relatively wide groove 25 similar to the groove 23, just mentioned, and in this groove 25 is slidably mounted a block 2G, which is rigidly secured to the rear end of a clamping bolt 27, which extends through a drill-hole 'formed in the radial extension 22, above mentioned, the arrangement being such that the block 26 and the graduated member 21 are mounted upon the pivot bolt 18 and they swing about this bolt a pivot. 1t it is desired to rigidly clamp the blade 19 to the arm 11, this is done by simply tightening up the thumb nut 28, which is threaded upon the outer end of the pivot bolt 18. H it is desired to draw a circle or 'arc by Patented July 13, 1920( inserting a pencil point or the like in the drill-hole 29, provided for this purpose, at one end of the blade 19, the thumb nut 28 isunscrewed suliciently to permit the blade 19 to swing relatively to the arm 11, while at the same time, the blade 19 may be prevented from moving bodily relatively to the pivot pin 18 by tightening up the thumb lnut 30, threaded upon the outer end of the `nations in the rst casereading upwardly from the head 10, and thegradua-tions upon the blade reading to the left from the pencil receiving hole 29. 10 Vby shifting the bladelongitudinally oic the arm until the pointer 31 lies over the desired graduation.` In order to provide means to assist in accurately positioning the blade 19, I have formed a number of spaced holes 33, positioned adjacent one edge ot the slot 17, and upon the rear face of the block 24 I have pivotally mounted a spring clip 34, having a pin 35 mounted thereupon adj a5 theclip 3l1will retain the pin 35 cent the outerv end of the clipk and projecting laterally therefrom in order that thesame may beV inserted in any one of the holes 33. The clip 34C is preferably mounted in arecess formed in the rear tace of the block 211 andjmay be moved from the position shown in full lines in Fig. et to the dotted positionin anobvious manner, a slot 36 being provided to clear the pin 35. In order lthat the blade 19 may be accurately adjusted to any desired angle relatively to the arm 11, I have provided the 'bolt 18 with a pointer 37, which is positioned to cooperate with the graduations upon the disklike member 21, the arrangement being such that when the blade 19 is swung angularly about the pivot pin 18,the graduated member 21 will be` moved by the blade,V
whereasthe pointer .37 will be prevented from rotating by means of theV block 24, which is rigidly secured to the inner end of the bolt. The cooperation between'the pin 35 and one of the holes 33, not only assists in properly positioning the blade 19 longitudinally of vthe arm 11, but also prevents the bolt 1S and blade carried thereby from moving accidentallywlien the thumb nut 2S has been backed oli' sufficiently to permit the blade 19 to be swung about its pivot bolt, in the manner above pointed out.

In a geometrical instrument, an arm, a blade slidably mounted thereupon, said arm having a plurality of sockets formed therein longitudinally of the same, a socket engaging element constructed to be moved into and out of engagementvwithmany onfe'ot said sockets, and resilient means pivotally `connected to said blade, said means havings'aid socket engaging element Vsecured theretorand movable thereby into and out of engagement with said sockets, said pivoted means arranged to swing said socket engaging element at right angles to the longitudinal axisv of said element out of alinement witlrsaid row of sockets.
