To all whom it may concern:

Be-it known that I, GEORGE H. AMEY, a

citizen of the United States, and resident of Fresno, in the county of Fresno and the State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hospital Bed- Mattresses, of which the following is 'a specification.

My invention relates to a bed mattress and more especially to a mattress used in hospitals for patients who can not readily be moved. 7

The object of my invention is to provide a mattress which has a center of semiflexible material stretched in a rigid frame, said mattress having a removable section from the side so that a frame containing either a section of mattress or a bed pan canbe readily inserted therein, or the section of the mattress can be left out so that a patient lying thereon can be washed without soiling the mattress.

I accomplish these and other objects hereinafter referred to by means of the device hereinafter described and illustrated on the is a perspectlve view of the mattress with a section removed-from the side, showing the slideway. Fig. 2 is a section of the mattress complete with removable frame. Fig. 3 is the removable section of the mattress without the base or frame. Fig. 4 shows an ordinary bed pan arranged on a slide adapted to fit in the recess and on the slideway. Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view of the mattress along the line w-w in Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional View of the mattress along line yy on Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is an enlarged view of the mattress bracing element.

The openmg B is encircled by a slideway designated on the several sides-of the opening as E, E and E The slideway is constructed at the approximate vertical center of the mattress so that either side of the mattress-can be used. G represents the removable section of the mattress complete as shown in Fig. 2. F, F and F are grooves running around the two sides and the back, the grooves being constructed so that the slideways E, E and E will readily enter therein. The front of the grooves F and F are formed so they will bind the slideways E and E when the section is in place on the mattress. In order to make the mattress more rigid I have formed two dowel holes P and P one on each side of the opening B and into the portion of the frame C and have attached dowel pins J and J 2 to the front end of base L, the arrangement being such that when the frame L is in place on the mattress the dowel pins J and J (which are connected by a rod J enter the dowel holes P and P thus keeping it from spreading. Fig. 7 shows the dowel pins J and J 2 and connecting rod J separately. This is used when the opening B is not closed, for the purpose of holding the mattress rigid. This may be necessary when giving the patient a dousch or in bathing him. The top of the base L slopes from the front toward the rear. H is'a section of mattress formed thicker at the back than at the front so that it will readily fit on the top of the base L and when assembled the top of the section H should be on a common plane with the top of the'mattress B. In Fig. 3 the thicker end of the mattress has been indicated as H and the thinner end as H 6 are mattress ties.

In Fig. 4 I have shown a modified form of base L on which is attached a bed pan K. The grooves F and F correspond with the grooves of the same letters in base L. t are holes through the mattress frame. R is a U brace, the ends of which pass into holes t and t, the purpose being to make the frame more rigid.

I claim asv new and ask for Letters Patent:

1. In a device of the character described the combination of a mattress having a rigid rectangular frame within the mattress near the outside edge thereof, flexible metal straps, extending through the mattress and attached to op osite si es of the frame, a section of sea mattress havin been removed from one side thereof, shdeways on opposite sides of the opening formed where said section is removed and a frame adapted to slide on said slideways having the up er surface slopin downward from the outslde edge toward t e center thereof, and a section of mattress thicker on one edge than on the opposite edge adapted to fit withinthe opening on thetop; of frame, to form an approximately leve the mattress, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the character described the combination of a mattress attached to a rigid rectangular frame, metal flexible straps extending through the mattress attached to opposite sides of the frame, said mattress having a section removed from one side thereof, a slideway around the sides of the openmg where said section was reted to carry a bed pan moved, a slide ada slidably fitted on t e slideway, and a sepasurface with the top of the combination of a mattress having a section on one side thereof removed, the opening formed by the removal of said section having a rigid slideway on two opposite sides thereof, frames constructed to slide within said slideway, one of said frames having a rigid base which slopes downward from the outside edge toward the center of the mattress, and a separate section of mattress constructed to fit on said base so that the top is on a proximately the same lane as the top oft e mattress, and one 0 said frames having a bed pan attached on the to thereof constructed so that when assemble with the mattress the top of the bed pan is approximately on the same plane as the top of the mattress, substantially as described.
