Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1Q, 1320.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that l, Snr-)serrano PARISI, a citizen of taly, and residing at N ew York, in the county of New York and State ci New York', have invented certain new and useful Ylmprovernents in lnnersoles, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to maire and use the same.
This invention relates to inner soles and particularly to devices of this class designed to be connected directly with the foot oi the wea-rer, and the object oi the invention is to provide an inner sole with means for holding the toes oi a toot in proper position when the toot is placed within a shoe and also to hold the toes of the foot in proper position when the wearer ot such inner sole is walking, running or standing still thus preventing the overlapping of the separate toes of a Joot as is usually the result, especially when shoes of too narrow widths are used, and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in an inner sole of the class speciiied coustructed in the manner hereinafter' described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following speeication, oi which the aecompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts oi? my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:-
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a shoe and showing my improved inner sole mounted therein and 'indicating the method of its use;
Fig. 2 a plan view of the inner solo detached;
F ig. 3 a bottom plan view oi a part of the inner sole shown in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4l a partial sectionL on the line el ffl of Fig. 2 and on an enlarged scale; and,
Fig. 5 a perspective detail view of one oi a number of wedge bars which l employ.
In the practice of my invention, l provide an inner sole 10, preferably composed ot leather, and which is approximately of the form of the inner face et the bottom portion of a shoe and comprises a toe part 11 and heel part 12. The edge portions or" the sole 10 are cut away on the opposite sides oi the sole to form a reduced edge portion 18 which extends entirely around the sole, and to this reduced portion is secured a felt or other cushioning material 14 by stitching as shown at 15.
Secured to one si le edge of the toe part 11 of the sole 10 by stitching as shown at 16 is a toe strap 17. The toe part 110i the sole 10 is provided with a plurality of elongated apertures 18 arranged transversely of said toe part and at predetermined intervals, tour of which apertures are preferably provided. Secured to the bottom aee ol` the inner sole 1G, or the toe portion 11 thereof, and around the apertures 18 are reinforcing strips 19 secured to the sole 10 by tacks 20 or in any other desired manner, said strips 19 being provided with parts 21 which entend into the apertures 18 as illustated in F 4l. The apertures 18 are approximately J -shaped in form in cross section, or wider at the bottom of the sole 10 than at the top thereof.
ln practice, l also employ a plurality oi' wedge loars 22 which are approximately V- shaped in term in 'cross section, and the length of which is approximately the same as the length of the apertures 18 of the inner sole 10, and these wedge bars operate to secure the strap 17 in the separate apertures 18 the manner hereinafter set out.
.in the use of my improved inner sole, the foot of the wearer is placed upon the sole 1G with the strap 17 in its detached free position, after which the free end portion of the strap 1T is passed around the big toe of the iioot and then downwardly and uthen upwardly through the aperture 18 next adjacent to the attached end ot the strap 17 to form a loop 23, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. L1,Y in which loop one of the wedge hars 22 is placed, this operation also :terms at the top of the solo l0 a large loop 24 which passes around the big` toe of the foot and the free end portion et the strap 17 is then pulled upwardly to bind the wedge har'in the aperture 18 and securely clamp the strap 17 in said aperture.
The above operation is repeated by threading the end portion oi the strap around the separate toes et the toot downwardly and upwardly through the apertures 18 to form other toe loops 25, 26, 27 and 28. It will be seen that the end portion of the strap 17 forms the last or small toe loop 28, the end portion of said strap extending downwardly at the side of the toot. It will be apparent that in threading the strap 17 around the separate toes or" the foot and securing them :los
in the apertures `18 by the wedge bars 22 that suiicient clearance will be allowed to permit of the free passage of the toesof a foot into and out of the loops .24Y to 28 inclusive, and
out, the wearer may place theinner sole 10V upon a foot by passing the toes of the foot through the loops 24 to 28 inclusive, after which Va stocking or 'soclr 29 is passed over the inner sole 10 and upon the foot 80, as indicated in Fig. 1, after which the foot 30 with the yinner sole 10 Yandthe stocking or .Y sock 29 thereon may be passed into a suitable shoe 31l in the usual manner, and when the foot 30 is within the shoe Ythe .separate toes of the foot are held in proper position,
' .the loops 24 to 28 inclusive preventing any upward, inward or overlapping movement of the separate toes of the foot one upon another. Y
In removing thev foot from the shoe the operation will be the same as is usually the custom, it being understood that the inner sole 10 will be withdrawn from the shoe with the vfoot and with the stocking or sock 29, and said inner sole may be removed from vthe foot whenever desired by first removing the stocking or sock 29. It will be under stood that the felt facing 14 on the edge portion of the inner sole will aid in preventing the cutting of the stocking or sock when passed over and around said inner sole, and it will also be understood that while I have shown certain details of construction for carrying my invention into effect that I am not necessarily limited to these details, as various changes therein` and Vmodifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention,
,what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
. 1. VAn inner sole, the toe portion of which is provided with a plurality of toe loops into which the separate toes of a foot are adapted to pass, and means in the toe portion of the sole for adjusting the size of said toe loops and lfor holding the same in position.
2. VAn inner sole ofthe class described comprising toe andf heel parts, a vstrap secured Vto one side of the toe part, and means on the Vcomprising toe and heel parts, a strap securedY to one sideofthe toe part, a plurality of apertures formed in said toe part, and
means operating lin .connection with said apertures for securing said strap therein at predetermined intervals to form on one side faceof said inner sole a plurality of toe loops. Y
' 4. An inner sole of the class described comprising toe and heel parts, a strap secured to one side-of the toe part, a plurality of apertures formed in said toe part, means operating in connection with said apertures for securing said strap therein at predetermined intervals to form on one side face of said inner sole a plurality of toe loops, and means secured to one face of the inner sole and within and around each of said apertures for reinforcing the same.
5. An inner sole of the class described comprising toe and heel parts, a strap secured to one side of the toe part, a plurality of apertures formed in said toe part, means operating in connection with said apertures for securing said strap therein at prede termined intervals to form on one side face of said inner sole a plurality of toe loops, means secured to one face ofthe inner sole and within and around each of said apertures for reinforcing the same, and the edge portion of said inner soleV being provided with a facing of cushioning material.
6. An inner sole of the class described comprising toe and heel parts, a strap secured to one side of the toe part, a plurality of apertures formed in said toe part, means for reinforcing said apertures, portions of said strap being adapted to pass'through each of said apertures, wedge bars mounted in said apertures for retaining said portions of the strap therein and to form on one face of said inner sole a plurality of toe loops.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 12th day ofl September, 1919.
