SHIRT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 17, 1920.
Application filed January 6, 1920. Serial No. 849,677.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES P. MULLANE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cambridge in the county of Middlesex and State of assachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Shirt, of' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in shirts, an object of the invention being to provide a sh1rt which economizes material, which is comfortable to the wearer, and which will remain smooth and not unduly wrinkle when used.
A further object is to provide a shirt which is practically tailless and which in lieu of the ordinary tails is provided with a belt which forms a part of the shirt and which fits snugly aroundthe hips of the wearer.
A further object is to provide a shirt with ventilated inserts below the arms which add to the comfort and increase the wearing qualities of the shirt.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a front view illustrating my im roved shirt in use;
*ig. 2 is a rear view of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the arm insert;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in front elevation of the lower portion of the shirt;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view in elevation of the rear lower portion of the shirt; and
Fig. 6 is a view in elevation of one of the side gussets.
My improved shirt may be made of any material which is commonly employed in the manufacture of shirts for the use of men and boys, but is of a length which terminates slightly below the waistline of the user and dispenses altogether with the ordinary tails. In lieu of the tails I secure a,belt 2 to the lower edge of the shirt and this belt fits around the hips of the user and is slightly enlarged at the front, as shown at 3, and is connected at the front by buttons 4 which are'in line with the buttons 5 of the shirt.
This extended portion 3 of the belt 2 fits snugly over the abdomen of the wearer and increases the comfort of the same and also tends to hold the shirt inside the trousers.
The belt 2 may be made of the same material as the shirt and is provided at the sides of the shirt over the hips of the wearer with gussets or inserts 6 which are preferably of jersey or other elastic yielding materiall to compel the belt to snugly fit the user and conform to the shape of the body. At the back of the belt I providea V-shaped gusset 7 which is also preferably of jersey or other similar material and at the edges of the gusset I provide eyelets 8 for the reception of a lacing tape 9 which can be drawn as tightly as desired to cause the belt to snugly fit the body of the user.
Under the arms 10 of the shirt 1, I locate inserts 11 which are preferably of diamond shape as shown in Fig. '3, and these inserts are also of jersey or other porous, flexible, elastic material which permit ventilation at this point and also serve to increase the wear and efficiency of the garment because of the fact that perspiration will not unduly harm the same as it would the ordinary material of the shirt. I
My improved shirt not only economizes material in'that it dispenses altogether with the tails of the shirt, but also renders the same more comfortable to the wearer because of the fact that there is no extensive material inside of the trousers and the belt 2 will snugly fit the body and hold the shirt smooth to prevent the same from working up out of the trousers.
Various slight changes may be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from the invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
An open front shirt, comprising a body portion adapted to fit loosely around the body of the wearer, said body portion terminating in a relatively wide belt adapted to fit snugly around the hips of the wearer, said belt being open at the front, securing devices at the free edges of the shirt, secur- -ing devices atthe ends of the belt in line with the securing devices in the shirt, and means carried b the intermediate portion of the belt for ad usting its length.
JAMES PATRICK MULLANE.
