WITNESSES TTOH N EY To all fui/wm', t may `concern UNHTE vSTATES PATENT orififcinff f i" GEORGE I.. BOWEB., or ennnivwoon, MASSACHUSETTS( f Be it vknownthat I, GEORGE L; BoWnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenwood, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Cam- L Cutting ttachmentstof which the following isa specification.
rlhis invention relates to machineelements,
and more particularly to cam cutting attachments.
- The object of therinvention is to provide a simple and efc'ient attachment this character capable of use en -any milling machine, lathe ordrill press, Y 1
Another object `is to provide an attachment of this character in Awhich the master cam is heldyieldably in engagement with the Ystop for controlling the movement of the. work carrying member to provide forvthe shaping of the-work in conformity with the master cam.
With the foregoing and other objects'in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinaftery described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the attachment constituting this invention, partsV being broken off, Y Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the K line 3--3 of Fig. 2, Y Y
Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, and
Fim 5 isfa similar view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2. y
In the embodiment illustrated, the attachment constituting this'invention comprises a base 1 preferably of. cast ironmounted on Awhat may be termed a sub-basev or suitable support 2,. which has rising therefrom a bracket 3 carrying at its upper end-a grooved pulley 4 for a purpose hereinafter to be described. Y ,l
Rising from the base 1 are a plurality of Vuprights, three being here shown, and numf bered 5, 6 and 7. These uprights have bearings to receive and'support aY shaft 8, which is of varying diameters vthroughout ,its

Application ,filed June 21, 191s. serial No. 241,174. f f
in Fig. 3. An eye 9 is carried bythe-end 8c of the shaft and -hasa flexible element f 10 connected ytherewith and extended over and ,guided by the pulley 41witha weight 11 secured to its lower end below the' supporting base 2. Thisweight l1 1 exerts its tension to move the shaft 8 longitudinally forward for a purpose presently to be described.V
Splinedfto the shaft 8'between the uprights.
6 andf7 is a, master cam 12v having ,ononey .face thereof'a cam l13,k although Vobviously this face may be -yaried to suit conditions is ladjustably, 'fixedto 'the shaft 8 by a set scre'w`14, and is forced ,against a stop 15 havingV a roller l16 atv .its freeend for 'contact according to the cam to becut., This cam .12
with the cam and 'whfich ismountedon af'- standard 17V rising fromthe'base ylyparallel with.y shaft k and to one side thereofas is shown clearly in'vf Fig. 2. This stop 15 `is in with a set screwll8-extending through the slot thereof-and entering the standard 17 yas is shown clearly lin Fig.`2,'which provides for the adjustment ofthe stop, to'lvary it in relationto the master cam 12.
The larger rear end 8,EL of the shaft8has y ward to yreceive .the arbor ofthe work tov be operated on,rwhich is here shown in the `a socket 1 9 4extending longitudinally in form of ajcam 21. A pin 20 extends longi- Y tudinally ,rearward from the end of the shaft 8 and is designed to enter an aper-Yy ture in the clam 21 to kbe cut, so as to insure the proper positioningwof the Vcam atallk times, it being understood lthat the cam is first roughed out, removed and finished, and itis necessary that it be placed in the same lrelation to the shaft 8 whenreplaced.
The cutter or work Shaper indicated at 22 is shown arranged at one side of the atv tachment in Fig. 2' andisV positioned to en v Y gage the side of the .cam 21 to. be shaped, it
being understood that this cutter'22 maybe l changed to meet the circumstances-requiredin whichis'mounted afworm shaft 2 5'l1aving a worm y26` on its inner end positioned t0 mesh with a ,refrescar 28 Sphnd'fo the so` l y the form of a longitudinally slotted plate 'y ling Athe master cam. Y
VVhile thisv attachment' is vsimple and` shaft 8" betweenthe uprights 5- and 6. A
hand wheel 27 is fixed to the worm shaft 25 and is adapted for rotating said shaft to actuate gear 28 and through said gear to impart rotary motion to the shaftV 8. Y
In the use of this attachment, the work-21 having been placed in the'socket 19 of the shaft, 8, the weight 11 operates to draw the shaft forward, thereby bringing the master cam 12 into Vcontact with the roller 1G on the stop'15, the cam projection 13of thelcam 12jlying in the path of said roller, soV that after the operator grasps the hand wheel 27 and imparts rotary motion to shaft 8 through Athe worm shaft 25 Vand gear 28, the cam A12 will turn with shaft 8 and when the projection 13 thereon engages roller V16, the shaft8 will move rearwardly against the tension of weight 11 and thus cause the 'cutter .22 to Ypass over the portion of the work 21 in afcorrespondingly curved path -svo that when completedthe cam'21'will correspond tothe master cam 12 which'constitutes'the 1pattern for formingv the cam 21. lt is ofV course. to be understood that the shape of the work 21r maybe varied by varystrong in construction it is very efficient in V'operation' and may be readily manufactured for use in connectionwith any milling mal chine, 'drilling' press, or lathe;
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may beconsidered the preferredor approvedform of my Y invention; Y. Itisfto be understood that I may make such Vchanges in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, ma-
terials, dimensions, etc., as mayprove eX- pedient and fall within. theV scopeY of the claimed invention. y Y' Having thus fully describedl my invention, what I claim as new and desireto sethereof, a shaft of varying diameters mounted to rotate and slide in said bearings, a master cam fixed to saidshaft between two of said uprights, a standard positioned on said base' at oneY side of said shaft,'a bar adjustable longitudinally on Ythe top ofsaid standard and having a roller atone end` positioned in the path vof'said cam, means for Vexerting a yielding pullin one direction on said shaft whereby the master cam isrheld in yieldable engagement with said roller, and work 'holding means carried by one end of said shaft.V
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two'witnesses.
