DAVID M. CMINGS, 0F NEWBURYPORT, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,267, dated January 28, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVE) M. GUMINGS, of Newburyport, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Bottle-Stopper, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a yertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail side view of the stopper.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improved device for fastening Stoppers in bottles; and consists in the combination of a stopper with an elastic collar, metallic center pin, hinged fastening-yoke, and hinged locking-lever, all arranged to operate as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A represents the mouth of the bottle, to which my improved stopper is to be applied. B is the stopper, made of suitable material, and fastened to a metallic center pin, C. The shape ofthe stopper B is by preference cylindrical, with an enlarged upper end, a, as shown. D is an elastic collar or covering which surrounds the entire stopper on all sides except the bottom, and which is at its lower end considerably larger than the upper part, as shown in Fig. 2. The pin (l has a iian ge, b, which rests on top of the elastic collar D. The lower end ofthe pin C forms a rivet-head against the lower end of the stopper B. E is a double wire yoke hinged to a ring, F, which embraces the neck of the bottle. The upper portion of this yoke is bent horizontally, and fitted through holes in the upper end d of the pin C, so that thereby the yoke, pin, and stopper are connected with each other. To another ring, G, that embraces the neck ofthe bottle, is hinged the lever H, which has a projecting arm, c. This lever, by preference, is made of Wire, as well as the yoke E.
When the stopper has been inserted within the mouth of the bottle the lever H is swung up, and its arm c crowded over the horizontal end of the yoke, in the manner indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. It thereby tends to force the yoke, with its appendages, down, while the lever itself and ring G are drawn up. In this way the stopper is forced into the bottle and held therein. The lever H being locked in the yoke, the enlarged outer part ot' the collar D is forced out or up within the mouth of the bot-tle, and thereby serves to seal and close the saine hermetically.
It will be observed that this invention will not operate without the use ot' the two wings F and G, of which one is drawn up and the other crowded down in order to secure the stopper in the bottle.
Having thus describedmyinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with an elastic stopper, of a flanged pin, C, a yoke, E, passing through the part d of said pin, a fastening-lever, H e, and rings F G, as shown and described.
I DAVID M. GUMINGS.
