POLISHI'NG APPARATUS. lcATloN man Nov 2s |91 1,353,429. PatentedSept. 21, 1920.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM SEVERNS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
POLISHING APPARATUS.
Application filed November 28, 1919.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM SEvERNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook -and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Polishing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention. relates to new and useful improvements in polishing apparatus.
An important object of the invention is to provide such an apparatus to which the polishing cloth may be quickly and readily applied or removed, and which holds the polishing cloth firmly in position during use.
A further object is to provide such an apparatus which may be quickly and readily constructed and is lasting in use.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent throughout the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my apparatus.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, the polishing cloth being shown in.
position.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings the numeral 10 indicates a suit- -able body portion preferably rectangular in form and provided approximately centrally thereof and with an upstanding lug 11. This lug is provided with a transverse bore 12 adapted to receive a pivot element 13 to which is pivotally secured a handle receiving socket 14.
The body portion is provided upon the upper face thereof about its edge with an upstanding flange 15. A pair of enlarged portions 16 are provided upon each of two opposing sides of the flange 15.
A pair of U-shaped clamping members 17 are provided having the outer ends of the arms of the U out turned as at 18 and dis# Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 21, 1920.
Serial No. 341,109.
.20 of the U firmly engaging the cloth between the flange 15 and the base and hold- `ing the cloth tightly. The cloth is nowdrawn tightly about the bottom of the body portion and about the other flange and the second U shaped arm forced .downwardly into position. As the arm swings downwardly into position it engages the cloth drawing it down and tightening the same and holding it in such tightened position. When it is desired to `remove the cloth 21 from the apparatus it is merely necessary to grasp the loose ends 22 and draw them upwardly thereby raising the U-shaped arm' and releasing the cloth It will be obvious that the fact that the cloth is passed about several angles will cause the cloth to have a'binding action tending to prevent slipping thereof and further assisting the action of the clamping arms 17. When in use for polishing the polishing material may be placed between the layers of the cloth and the body portion 10 reciprocated by manipulation of handle 23. As the body portion 1() is of considerable weight it will be unnecessary to apply any pressure to the handle 28 other than that necessary to shift the body portion upon the floor or article being polished.
As many changes are possible in the shape, size and arrangement of the various parts shown, I do not limit myself to the specific structure herein described, but may make any such changes, without departing from the Ispirit of the invention, or the scope ofthe subjoined claims.
What I claim is: In polishing apparatus, a body portion provided upon its upper surface with a continuons upstanding flange on its periphery, means for connecting an operating handle to said body, a pair'of Unshaped clamping members having the ends of tbe arms of the U out turned, and bearings formed on said body portion adapted to receive said out turned ends, the portions of said clamping members forming the base of the U being disposed adjacent the interior of the flange when the clamping members are in clamping 10 position. i
n In testimony whereof I affix my signature 1n presence of two Witnesses. WILLIAM SEVERNS.
