Be itknown that ANTONIO NAPOLILLO, a subject of the King 4of italy, residing at Rivesville, in the county ofV Marion and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Holding Devices, of which the ollowing is a specification.

My invention relates to a check holding device adapted to be secured to the belt or the like of the user.

An important object of the invention is to provide a device of the above-mentioned character, so constructed that `the checks may be conveniently placed upon and removed from the hook or holding member, but cannot be accidentally displaced therefrom, the device being so constructed that the end of the hook is covered so that it cannot injure or inconvenience the user.

A further object of the invention is to provide means for securely retaining the device upon the belt. Y

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

The numeral 11 designates a hook or hold- Y ing member, having an inner part 12, which 1s passed through an 'opening 13a formed in the body portion 5. The upper end ofv i the part 12 is passed-through an opening 14 formed in the body portion 5 and spread oriiattened, thereby rigidly attaching the holding element or hook 11 to `t'he'body portion5..

The hook 11 has its free end portion 12 adapted to enter a longitudinal slot 13, .formed in a spring guard 14, rigidly attached to the body portion 5, as shown at 15. This spring guard is bent to provide an upper head 16, which overhangs the point of the hook 11, such head-having a shoulder 17, serving as a guide means to direct the check behind the free end ofthe hook 11,

which-projects outwardly beyond the slotted and longitudinally curved end portion 13 of the spring guard, as shown. The free end of the curved portion-13 is spaced from the hook 11, and diverges therefrom, lserving as a guide' in removing the check. y

The numeral 18 designates checks, having apertures 19, for the reception of the hook 11.

In the use of the device,'the same is secured to the belt of the user, as indicated in Fig. 3. The check is then brought beneath the shoulderv 17, and guided thereby,

so that the hook 11 passes into the aperture 19, the check being then drawn downwardly, as indicated in Fig. 3. W'hen the check assumes the lower position, as shown in Fig. 1, I

the spring guard 14 moves outwardly, thereby preventing the accidental displacement of the checks from the hook 11, but the end ofthe portion 13 of the spring guard serves as a guide, whereby the check may be conveniently passed between the spring guard and the hook to remove'thesame.

It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith 'sho-wn and described is to be taken as the preferred example of the same, and that various changesin the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or subjoined claims. p

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A check holding device of the character described, comprising a body portion, an upstanding hook secured thereto, and a spring guard secured tothe body portion the scope ofthe and having a longitudinally curved end portion, said end portion having a longitudinal slot formed therein and spaced from the Jfree end of the same, said slot receiving the end portion of the hook with the free end of the hook extending outwardly beyond the longitudinally curved end portion and the ree end of such longitudinally curved end portion extending inwardly beyond the hook.

2. A check holding device of the character described, comprising a body portion, an npstanding hook carried thereby, and a guard carried by the body portion and having a head overhanging the free end of the hook and an extension carried by the head and provided with a slot to receive the free end of the hook with such free end projecting beyond the extension, said head being provided with a lower guide shoulder disposed near the free end of the hook.

A check holding device of the character described, comprising a body portion, a downwardly extending portion carried by said body portion to receive the belt of the wearer, a spring element connected with said body portion, a belt engaging member carried by the spring element, said belt engaging member being normally projected toward the belt oic the wearer and means carried by the body portion for holding a check.
