UNITED STATES PERCY VICTOR GOODWIN, OF GOLDERS GREEN, LONDON, ENGLAND.
BOX, CASE, AND LIKE RECEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1920.
Application filed July 13, 1920. Serial No. 395,981.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Pnnor Vroron Goon- WIN, subject of His Majesty the King of England, and resident of Golders Green, in the county of London and Kingdom of England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, Cases, and like Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the construction of boxes, cases and like receptacles, of the kind having an inner tray which is automatically raised when the lid or cover is opened and which in some constructions is then capable of being tilted.
The invention has for its object to provide a box of the above kind which is of extremely simple and economical construction, all of the effects being produced by the nature of the hinged connections between the parts, no springs, stays, jointed levers, or other auxiliary members being employed.
The present invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
As the invention is especially applicable to soap boxes, it is hereinafter described as applied thereto with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box or receptacle showing the lid fully opened and the supporting tray elevated;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view illustrating more clearly the hinge and tray controlling parts; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional elevation of the box.
The box or receptacle may be made ofanyor eyes on their respective parts. A tray (Z is provided inside the box and is so arranged that it rises automatically as the box is opened. To accomplish this the tray is arranged as an attachment to the lid, being provided at one edge with an upstanding flanged portion or lug a which is hingedly connected as shown at f to an arm 9 conveniently formed as an integral extension of the side of the lid or cover Z) of the box. Thus when the lid b is fully opened it will bring the tray 03 in line with or slightly above the top edge of the bottom portion a of the box as shown in Fig. 1. Normally or when the box is closed the tray Wlll rest upon or be in close proximity to the bottom of the box as shown in Fig. 3, and the opening of the lid will cause the lid 6 and the tray (Z to move as a whole about the mam pivot or hinge pin 0 of the box. The tray d can also be tilted independently about its hinge f to give access to the inside or lower portion of the box for cleaning or other purposes. The tray (Z may be slightly dished to better accommodate or hold the soap, and it may also if desired be suitably perforated to allow of the escape of superfluous water.
It will be obvious that the improved tray for delivering or facilitating the removal of the contents may be applied to other boxes or receptacles such for instance as portmanteaux, trunks, instrument boxes for sterilizing purposes, and cigarette cases. In the latter example especially the lower portion a of the box could conveniently be made deeper so as to hold a number of cigarettes on each side of said tray.
hat I claim is The combination with a receptacle, of a hinged cover, an extension provided on the cover at the hinged edge and lying within the receptacle against the wall thereof when the cover is closed but extending above the receptacle when the cover'is wide open, a tray having an upstanding flanged portion hinged at its outer edge to the free end of the extension, said tray lying at the bottom of the receptacle when the cover is closed, said tray being elevated substantially to the level of the top edges of the receptacle when the cover is opened with the flanged portion abutting the extension and the hinge being above the top edges of the receptacle, the hinges or" the cover and of the tray being independent and spaced apart by the length of the extension whereby the tray may be tilted about its own hinge when the cover is open.
In testimony whereof I hereunto have signed mgname.
ERCY VICTOR GOODWIN.
