Be it known that I, ROBERT H. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baseball Mitts and Gloves, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to base-ball gloves and mitts, and pertains more particularly to the class of such articles that are rigid or semi-rigid in construction, and have a depression or substantially semi-spherical pocket in the face thereof for thereception of a baseball.

The object of my invention is to produce a mitt of the class described in which means are provided for dispersing the billow of air that is piled up in front of a base-ball in rapid flight and which, being interposed between the ball and the glove, forms a cushion of compressed air that frequently prevents the ball from seating in the mitt and causes it to rebound therefrom.

A further object thereof is to produce suitable means for allowing such compression to be exhausted on the impact of the ball in the mitt, and to automatically stop the return of air through the means pro-- vided for its escape whereby a partial vacuum is created in the depression in the mitt, which has a tendency to offset the normal rebound of the ball from the glove; and a still further object of my invention is to produce a more simple, cheap and efficient device of said character than has heretofore been attained.

To these ends, my invention includes the combination and arrangement of component parts to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

5 is secured on the back and a thick layer of padding material 6, such as felt, is carried between the front and back portions to cushion the hand of the wearer from the force of the impact of a ball when caught in flight.

A mitt of said character is formed with a depression 7 in the face thereof approximately at the palm of the hand of the wearer, and users of such gloves constantly endeavor to mold such depressions to the greatest possible depth and shape its walls to snugly conform to the size and contour of a standard base-ball.

It will be appreciated that a ball that is projected through the air at great speed and momentum causes a billow of air to pile up ahead of its course, which when interposed between the ball and the depressed portion of the mitt forms a resilient air'cushion. For the purpose of providingan outlet for such compressed air, I provide one or more vents 8 in the depressed face? of the mitt which are connected by flexible tubes 9 with outlet ports 10, preferably in the side walls of the mitt. Said tubes are preferably imbedded in the padding structure 6 to protect them from injury.

Adjacent to the out-let end of each of the tubes 9, a spring-pressed valve 12 may be secured in the tube, adapted to permit the passage of air from the pocket in the mitt under forced pressure, but which will close to prevent the return of air, whereby the tendency of a ball to rebound from the mitt will be resisted.

While 1 have illustrated my improvement as applied to fingerless mitts, it will be un' derstood that it may be applied to finger gloves, and it will be appreciated that its construction and arrangement may be mod-- ified from the specific embodiment illus trated and described without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, is:

1. A base ball mitt comprising a cover, continuous padding material carried there-- in between the face and back portions, the face portion of the cover having a vent to permit the escape of air in catching a ball.

2. A base-ball mitt comprising a cover,
