Be it known that I, JOHN Hnonnrorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lincoln and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Tmprovement in Needlelinives, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to self binders and particularly to the application of a cutting blade to the needle. whereby tangled grain, grass, and weeds will be out and thus prevent clogging the course of the needle.
The object of my invention is to provide a means which will prevent clogging the course of the needle by the tangled grain and weeds which are often encountered. This result I secure by mounting upon the needle a cutting blade, curved to correspond to the curvature of the needle, thus providing means whereby the movement of the needle will cause such tangled material to be cut, so that it will not interfere with the proper functioning of the binding mechanism.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown my invention embodied in the form I prefer to use.
Figure 1 is a side view of a binder needle having my device attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same parts.
In operating grain binders when the grain is down or tangled, or when there is considerable amount of weeds or grass therein,
trouble is often caused by the accumulation of a tangled mass through which the needle must penetrate. Also such tangled mass of stems causes successive bundles to be held together, by reason of the large number of stems which are partly incorporated in successive bundles.
To remedy this trouble I provide the needle with a cutting blade which will act to out such tangled masses, thus clearing the course of the needle and making certain the separation of the bundles.
In the drawings, 1 represents a needle such as is used upon one make of self binders. This is typical of practically all successful binders. This needle oscillates upon a pivot 2. As shown in Fig. 1 it is in the position occupied after it has penetrated through the grain which is being delivered to the binding mechanism and in the position occupied when tying the knot. In such binders there is a bar or bars occupying in general the position of the dotted lines 5, between which the needle passes.
The cutting member consists of a thin steel plate 3 having its outer edge 30 curved to conform approximately to the curvature of the outer edge 11 of the needle, and provided with means whereby it may be secured to one side face of the needle. Such securing means should preferably permit adjustment to vary the projection of the cutting edge beyond the needle.
As illustrated, the forward end of the cutting blade is reduced to a narrow section 31 which will not overlap the inner edge of the point 13 of the needle, and the tip of this section is laterally bent so as to enter the needle eye 12 and interlock with the needle. The blade also has holes, as 33, adapted to receive a clamping and securing bolt or screw 34-. This will sufliciently hold the blade in place. By shifting between the holes 33, the projection of the cutting edge 30 may be varied. I
In use, the cutting edge 30 will sever the tangled masses so that they will not interfere with the movement of the needle or the proper functioning of the tying mechanism.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination with the needle of a grain binder of a knife blade secured to one side of the needle and having an outer cutting edge approximately paralleling the outer edge of the needle andmeans for adjusting the knife to vary the projection of said cutting edge beyond the needle.
2. The combination with the needle of a grain binder of a knife blade having a cut.- ting edge approximately paralleling the outer edge of the needle, the knife having a forward tip secured to the needle near its point and also having a plurality of openings for receiving a bolt whereby to secure it to the needle arm to thereby adjust the projection of the cutting edgetbeyond the outer curve of the needle.
3. The combination with the needle of a grain binder, of a knife removably secured to the needle and having a continuous cutting edge extending beyond the outermost edge of the needle and curved to approximately parallel said outermost edge.
