Be it known that I, CAIN B. MEREDITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in ShoestringHolders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is a shoe string holder arranged to be fastened over the ends of the laces of a shoe for preventing the untying of the laces and to provide a neat and ornamental but practical device of this character. The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe having the improved shoe string holder applied thereto.

In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and t the shoe string holder is shown as comprising a receptacle and arranged to receive the ends 1 of the shoe laces of a shoe 2. This receptacle is provided with a hinged cover adapted to be closed over the ends of the shoe laces and the tying knot formed therein, and is also provided with a depending lip arranged to be received over the top edge of the shoe so as to support the holder against the outer surface of the shoe at the upper edge thereof.

The receptacle forming the shoe string holder comprises a base 3, preferably tapering in width toward its lower end to form a holder which will fit snugly over the instep at the upper edge of the shoe. The base of the holder is provided with upwardly extending side walls 4 and a cover 5 for the holderis hinged to the lower side wall of the receptacle as shown at 6. The upper edge of the cover is preferably formed with a spring lip 7 arranged to be received in a groove 8 formed in the upper side walls of the receptacle when the cover is closed.

The receptacle as thus formed is adapted to be supported in position by a lip 9 deplan View of the shoe pending from the upper edge of the receptacle in spaced relation therefrom, so that the lip may extend downwardly inside of the shoe and thus support the receptacle against the outside of the shoe. is preferably curved transversely so as to gonform more readily to the shape of the cot.

When the shoe string holder is employed upon a shoe having the usual hooks 10 it may be necessary to form elongated grooves 11 upon the under side of the face of the receptacle in which thehooks are adapted to be received so that the holder may fit snugly against the outer surface of the shoe.

The ends of the shoe laces are adapted to be drawn through the receptacle forming the shoe string holder, for which purpose the base 3 of the receptacle is provided with apertures 12, preferably adjacent the upper edge of the receptacle. The shoe laces are drawn through these apertures and tied and the cover of the holder is then closed, thereby completely concealing the ends of the shoe strings and the knot formed therein.

In the modification of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the depending lip 9 is preterably hinged to the upper edge of the cover 5 of the holder by the hinge 13 and the lower edge of the receptacle forming the holder is hinged to the lower edge of the cover as shown at 6', so that the receptacle is swung upwardly and closed against the cover 5. The receptacle may be held in closed position by the latch 7 engaging the groove 8 at the upper edge of the cover.

The lip 9' having been positioned against the inner surface of a shoe will preferably hold the receptacle comprising the holder in position by a stud 14.- upon the lip 9 engaging in an aperture 15 provided in the cover 5. In this form of the invention the ends of theshoe laces preferably extend into the receptacle of the holder through. notches 12 provided in the side edges of the cover of the receptacle.

The holder as thus formed provides a simple and ornamental arrangement for holding the ends of shoe laces and for concealing the tied knot formed in the laces. Furthermore, it will be observed that the receptacle formed by the shoe string holder provides ready means for carrying small articles.

2. A shoe string holder comprising a shallow receptacle, a hook on the rear side thereof, a hinged cover for closing the front of said receptacle, the bottom of said receptacle being provided with vertically disposed grooves adapted to accommodate hooks on the shoe to which the device is applied, and there being openings formed through the bottom of the receptacle near the upper edge thereof, which openings are adapted to receive the end portions of thestrings of the shoe to which said device is applied.

In a shoe string holder a receptacle comprising a back plate and a forwardly projecting marginal flange, said back plate being provided with vertically disposed grooves adapted to receive hooks on the shoe to which the device is applied, the upper portion of said back plate being provided with openings that are adapted to receive the end portions of the shoe strings, a hook on the rear side of said back p1ate, a cover hinged to the lower portion of the marginal flange of the receptacle, and means for retaining said cover in closed position upon the receptacle.
