Be it known that I, MARTIN NYHUs, .a citizen of Norway, residing at Ashland, 1n the county of Ashland and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Impro'vements in Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to mattresses, cushions or the like, including a separable pad, which. can be readily and easily removed from the mattress when it is desired to air the same, the invention being particularly advantageous for use in hospitals andsimilar institutions wherein the -mattress can be maintained in a sanitary condition with 11ttle or no trouble. n

In carrying out my invention, I provide the body portion of the mattress with a raised edge thus defining a depressed center portion, 1n which the removable pad 1s adapted to fit, the pad being secured to the raised edge if desired by any suitable detachable fastening means.'`

Other objects and advantages of the 1n vention will appear when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts .as claimed.'

I9, 1921L While the invention is described and illustrated as a mattress, I desire to have it understood that the features of the invention may be embodied in pillows, cushions or the like, and all kinds of upholsteredlfurniture.

'Ihe mattress herein shown includes a spring frame 10, of the usual construction,

including upper and lower frame members lbetween which, is arranged a coiled springs l1. The frame proper may beconstructed of steel or ratan or any other Suitable material fromv which the rolled edge may be suitably built up. rIhe spring frame in its entirety is covered by a suitable l1n1ng'13. For securing this lining to the respective springs of the frame, I utilize a pair of substantially triangular shapedl including bendable prongs `18 which alsopass through the washer 19 arranged beneath the convolution of the spring to which the plate is secured. The bendable'prongs 18 of the lfastening element are bent to lie against the washer 19, and in this manner the lining is eectively secured to the frame. The lining 13 is of course drawn very tight about the frame before being attached to `the springin the manner described. If kde- I sired, this lining 13 may also be sewed to the upper and lower members of the frame about the edges thereof. Built up about the spring frame, is a rolled edge 22 which is filled with cotton or other suitable material 23. The raised or rolled edge 22 is of sufficient height to provide the body plurality of portion of the mattress with a central de- I pression 24 in which the removable pad 25 is adapted to be fitted. The padv25 may be loosely arranged within, the depression 24, or in other words attached thereto asthe rolled edges 22 will embrace the edges of the pad 25. However, the pad 25 may be designed'to accommodate a flexible element not shown, and through the instrumentality of which the pad 25 may b'e laced with the rolled edge 24,- but as shown in Fig.` 5, I

preferably equip the rolled edge 22 with the members 26 forming part of ball and l socket connections, the coperating members 27 being suitably secured to the pad 25. When constructed, thepad can be cletachably Secured to the body of the mattress, and 'easily removed therefrom when occasion requires. Manifestly, by reason of the fact that the pad 25 is separable from the body of the mattress, the pad can be removed and easily handled by any one Withhospitals or the like.

While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention Will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to thedetails herein shown and described,and that-such.y changes may be resorted to When desired as fall Within the scope of What is claimed.

What I claiml is:

1. A mattress comprising a spring frame, a covering for'said frame,y means for connecting the opposed ends of the spring to said covering, rolled edges built up from said frame, a separable pad Areposing upon the frame and lying Within the confines of said rolled edges' and means for detachably connecting the mattress With said edge.

2. A mattress comprising a spring frame, a covering therefor, plates arranged against the opposite ends of each spring and having their turned over portions embracing the adjacent convolutions, Washers arranged at opposite sides of said plates and said covering, and fastening elements passed through said Washers, coveringl and plate for securingthe springs .to the covering. v
