IMPROVEMENT IN BED-LQUNGES,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 13?,677, dated April 8, 1873 application filed March 1, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HARTZELL, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Bed-Lounge, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is a readily convertible combined bed and lounge, the main feature of my invention being the peculiar construction of the arm of the lounge, which, as best observed in the perspective view, Fig. 1, consists of va fixed portion, A, a movable portion, B, pivoted to the same at a, and an upholstered cushion, D, hinged to the back of the lounge or to the fixed arm at b. The body of the lounge consists of the fixed portion E, to which the back F and fixed arm A are secured-as usual, and of an upholstered portion, E, hinged to the front of the fixed portion at d so that it may be turned to either of the two positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the draw- When a lounge is required, the movable arm B is turned on its pivot in the direction of the arrow 1 until it rests against the fixed arm. The movable portion E of the body is then turned over onto the fixed portion and the upholstered flap or pillow D turned down upon the arm, all as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
In converting the lounge into a bedstead the operation is reversed, the pillow being first raised in order to permit the hinged portion of the body to be turned over and supported on its feet f, after which the pivoted arm B is swung around in the direction of the arrow 2 until it rests upon the extended body, and the cushion D is next turned in upon the fixed arm so as to form a continuous flush headboard or bolster for the bed, as shown in the plan diagram, Fig. 3.
The pivoted arm B is to be suitably upholstered, and a receptaclemc, for bed-clothes, &c., is to be formed in the fixed portion E of the body of the lounge, this receptacle being entirely concealed when the hinged portion E of the body is turned over onto the fixed portion.
I claim as my invention- In a bed-lounge, the combination, substantially as described, of a fixed arm, A, a supplementary arm, B, pivoted to the same, and a hinged cushion or pillow, D.
