Be it known that l, CHARLES KEMPER Herr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Christiansburg, in the county of Montgomery and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Broomholders; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apper'tains to make and use the same.

rlhis invention relates to brooms, and especially to an improved holder for broom straws.

An object of this invention is to provide an improved holder for broom straws 'in making a broom wherein a more substantial broom is constructed and one that can be constructed more simply and economically. ln the usual type of broom holderv in which straws may be renewed the grip is at a single point on a straw or for a very short distance along the straw, which tends to break the straws.

this difficulty and to provide a long grip and to provide a durable and thrust resistance structure in accomplishing this.

A further object of this invention is to provide an improved type of broom and improved means of mounting broom straws to a broom handle.

A further object of this invention is to provide a means for mounting any type of straws or bristles to form a durable and substantial brush `and one in which the bristles or straws may be quickly and easily renewed.

A further object of this invention is to provide a. broom handle which may be sold without the straws for use in localities where broom straws are available and in which a substantially life longbroom may be provided straws therefor.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, the combination, the detail, and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

ln the embodiment of my invention l provide a handle 2 preferably of wood which is bored at 3 and provided with a nut i on the end thereof, which nut d is held by a ferrule 5, having a perforated end thrust member 14:, which ferrule is inserted over the nut and the bored end of the handle and affixed by tacks 6. There is also provided a bolt 7 having threads comating the threads of nut 4, which bolt is mounted in a pear shaped block 8 and affixed thereto b y its head or a nut 9 and a nut 10 and which is also provided with a reinforcing band 11. There is also provided a hollow truncated cone 12, preferably of sheet metal, having an annulus 13, provided with a double seam or inserted wire at 15 and 16. ln the modified form for a flat broom the shell 12 corresponding to shell 12 is also provided with a binder 17 of structure similar to an ordinary safety pin and connected with the shell 12 by a pair of links 18 and 18, and is also provided with a reinforcing bolt 19.

ln filling this holder with straws the shell 12 is first filled to a predetermined capacity with properly cut straws and the block 8 is inserted from the lower part through the said straws passing the bolt 3 through the thrust member 14C and into nut A, whence by the turning of the handle 2 the nut 4, which is affixed thereto, draws the block 11 into the shell 12 and angularly compresses the straws against the side wall thereof. lt is obvious that the angularity of the side wall and of the block is very slight relative to the axis of the bolt and that by reason of this slight angularity a powerful compression is obtained which is further multiplied by the screw thread of the nut and which is resisted by the thrust resisting design of the shell,` so that it is possible with very slight turning resistance against the hand to provide a very tight grip upon the straws for a distance of several inches and to make their removal or shaking out practically an impossibility without breaking the straws, and since there is no tendency to break the straws, it provides a much more substantiai ico ioll
