Description

M. BERCOVICI.
COMBINED MATCH Amp TOOTHPICK.
APPLICATION flLED Nov. 4, 1916.
tented June 21 1921. i9: 5.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAURICE IBERBOVICI, OF BOTOSANI, .ROUMAITIA.
COMBINED MATGH'AND TOOTHIPIGK.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 21, 1921.
Application filed November 4, 1916. Serial No. 129,528.
. To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAURICE BERCOVICI, a sub'ect of the Emperor of Austria, residing at otosani, Roumania, Calea Nationala 213, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combined Matches and Toothpicks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an arrangement for enabling one to easily carry along matches and tooth-picks in a packing partof this specification and in which similar letters of reference relate to corresponding parts throu houty the several views, two modes of execution of'the inventions object are represented.
Figure 1 is a front view of a single strip showing the combined arrangement of toothpicks andfn atches in one form of execution.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the strip illustrated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective showing of said strip in combination with its packing or wrapper.
Fig; 4 represents in a front view a modified form of a strip. carrying tooth-picks and matches according to my invention.
Fig-J5 is a perspective view of the strip of Fig. 4 in combination with its packing or wrapper.
In the two modes of execution of my invention the common feature is that from a thin strip (1 preferably consisting of white or other suitable wood .both the tooth-picks b and the matches 0 are cut out. Further,
in the figures the tooth-picks and matchesare shown as being arranged in two rows, but of course the arrangement may also be such that the tooth-picks and matches form one single row or several rows.
According to the form of invention represented in the Figs. l-3 the tooth-picksw or wrapper. -To this purpose I preferably and the matches 0 are cut, stamped, or
punched longitudinally out of the strip a which is folded in its middle '(Fig. 2) in order to form two rows 0 combined toothpicks and matches.
In the arrangement shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the tooth-picks and matches are cut or stamped out transversely in the wood-strip a which is correspondingly folded in its middle so as to form two rows of combined tooth-pinks and matches.
Of course, the cutting out and folding of the combined tooth-picks and matches may 4 at option be effected in the transversal or in the longitudinal direction of the wood fibers,
Moreover, the superposed rows or groups of combined tooth-picks and matches instead of being manufactured by using one single wood strip a may also be formed of several wood strips connected together by means of an adhesive (glue or the like) or in another suitable manner. If desired, said rows may also besimply fastened in a suitable way to the packing or wrapper d by means of an adhesive or in any other way.
The parts a indicated by dotted lines of the wood strip a may also be provided with incisions or indentations of small depth so as to enable the tooth-picks b and the matches 0 to be more easily torn away from the wood strip a. However, these incisions or indentations are not absolutely necessary.
Owing to the above described arrangement it is possible to pull off from the strlp a a little piece of wood provided at one end with an igniting head like the usual matches and having the other end pointed like a toothpick. If desired, a match and a toothpick may also be torn away separately, and at different times. I i
For disinfection the points of the toothpicks may be impregnated with tincture of iodin or the like.
The flat packing D for the combined toothpicks and matches consists of a wrapper made of paper, card-board or any other suitable 'material. The lower flap 7 of said wrapper may be provided with a slit k for Y receiving the tongue 71 of the upper closing fla or cover and. also with a prepared surface m for igniting the matches.
In Fig. 3. the points of the tooth-picks are covered or overlapped by said flap f, in Fig. 5 by a lateral flap 9, so as to protect said points against dust or the 'like.
By'the combined arrangement of toothpicks and matches in a foldable flat packing or wrapper according to the present invention it is not necessary to carry along both objects separately; On the contrary, only one packing or casing is sufiicient which does not need to be much larger than the known flat packing for matches. In this way the carrying along of such a packing answering for two purposes is very convenient.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. As a new article of manufacture a ,package of combined matches and toothpicks, comprising two' overlying and connected portions, each portion having a plurality of separable members, both ends of which are free, one end being pointed and the other end provided with an igniting substance.
2. Asa new article of manufacture a package of combined matches and tooth picks, comprising a thin strip of wood and the other end terminating short of the ends of the members of the other portion.
In witness whereof I have-hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
MAURICE BERCOVICI.
Witnesses RAYMOND J. WHITNEY, H. ABs'rENDER.
