Application filed January 20, 1921.
T 0 all 20 hom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN E. PAT'roN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York,.have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pillows.
This invention relates to improvements in pillows and is particularly adapted for use in hospitals, sanatoriums and places where confinement to the bed is necessary.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a pillow having removable sections so that by a rte-arrangement of the elements, the structure of the pillow may be changed in order to-rest certain portions of the body and at the same time permit other portions to escape contact with the pillow.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pillow wherein the sections may be removed and used individually to provide a number of smaller cushions.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1, is a plan view of a pillow constructed in accordance with this invention showing the same assembled.
Fig. 2, is a view similar to Fig. 1, illustrating a ire-arrangement of certain elements.
Fig. 3, is a plan view of two of the secform a small cushion and,
Fig. a, is a perspective view of the main body of the pillow illustrating the same folded upon itself,
Fig. 5, is a perspective view of a pair of pillows connected together to provide a life preserver.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 5 designates the main body of the pillow provided at its opposite longitudinal edges with recesses 6 and 7. Suitable securing elements such as tapes 8 are secured at convenient places L t the edges of the body 5 and are arranged to cooperate with similar securing elements such as tapes 9 carried by the cushion sections 10 and 11 which are arranged to fit into the recesses 6 and 7 respectively.
In use it will be seen that when so desired,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Au 9, 1921..
Serial no. 438,578.
the cushion elements 10 and 11 may be removed and only the body 5 used in which event the head may be supported without the shoulder or any other portion of the body contacting with the pillow. It is also obvious that the two sections when removed may be joined together as at Fig. 3 to produce a cushion which may be used for various purposes or if found desirable one or both of the sections may be secured to the body as illustrated in Fig. 2 or the pillow may be folded in the manner illustrated in Fig. 4 and its opposite edges secured together by the tapes 8.
It is obvious that should it be so desired other forms of securing means such as snaps, hooks and eyes, buttons and the like may be substituted in lieu of the tape.
In Fig. 5 I have shown an adaptation of my pillow for marine use and in such devices it will be understood that the body of the pillow may be filled with any suitable buoyant substance such as ground cork and when the pillow is used in the manner just set forth, it is obvious that the tapes must be lengthened to provide shoulder straps and they must be formed of heavier material than is ordinarily required.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described a preferred embodiment of this invention, that certain minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is 1. A pillow comprising a main body portion having recesses in its opposite longitudinal sides, cushions adapted to fit the recesses and means for removably securing said cushions in place.
2. A pillow comprising a main body portion having recesses in its opposite longitudinal sides, cushions adapted to fit the recesses, securing means carried bythe cushions and by thepillow arranged in such a manner as to permit the cushions to be secured to the body in various positions, and said cushions being also adapted to be held together by their securing means to form another pillow.
Signed in the city, county and State of New York, this 18 day of January 1921.
JOHN EDWARD PATTON.
