Description

UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
ABR HAM nonow, or New YORK, N. Y. Y
- BOOK-SUPPORT.
Application .filed any 23,
To all whom it may concern i Be it known that I, ABRAHAM Ronow, a citizen of the United States, residing at 1594 Webster Ave, in the city of New York, 1n the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented a new/and useful Book-Support, of which the followlng 1s a specification. 2 v 7 My invention relates toimprovements in a book support, which may be used by a person in alounging position, and itconsists in the novel features hereinafter more fully described.
The objectsof my improvement are:
First: To provide a support for a-book when used by-a person in a lounging position. Second: To have said support adjustable for different positions of the body and for persons of diflerent sizes.
' Third: To have said book support comparatively simple, durable and inexpensive.
I attain these objects by the book support illustrated in the accompanying drawings or by any mechanical equivalent or obvious modification of the same.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of my book support, showing the sockets 21 and 22 in section.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line AB of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the two views.
11 designates the backing plate of my book support; 12 is the shelf or horizontal extension of said plate, and it may be made in one therewith. Saidplate 11 is shown in Fig. 1 as having in its sides the notches 13, through which pass the clamps 17, which are connected at the rear of said plate 11 to the elastic member 18, which may be a spring, as shown in Fig. 2, or a rubber strip, if desired.
Said plate 11 is pivotally connected to a socket 14: by means of a suitable pin 15; sald' socket 14 is adapted to slide along the curved members 19 and 20 through the application of force and to rest thereon when left undisturbed.
Said plate 11 is still further connected to said curved members 19 and 20 by means of the stirrups 16 which are adapted to permit said plate 11 a certain amount of angular adjustment with said members 19 and 20 by means of said pivot 15.
Said members 19 and 20 are made of strips of flexible steel or some other suitable material, and they are connected each at one end Specification; of Letters Patent.
' Patented Sept. 6, 1921 19.20. Serial No. 398,448.
thereof to one of the sockets 21 and 22 by means of soldering or in any other suitable manner.
, The other end of each of said members 19 and 20 is similarly secured to one of the links 2a, which are pivotally connected to the base plates 26 through the bearing 25.
Said members 19 and 20 form a bracket for the support of said backing plate 11.
Said base plates 26 are detachably connected to each other by means of the straps 27 ,which may be of leather, canvas or any other suitable material, and the pins 28, whlch are adapted to fit suitable pin holes in the ends of said strap 27.
Said sockets 21 and 22 are provided each with a pair of oblong rings to enable one to shift said sockets 21 and 22 toward each other or away from each other, thereby respectively enlargingor diminishing the loop formed by said curved members 19 and 20, the links 24% and the strap 27, to enable it to fit-diiferentfpersons or the same person in different positions.
To :use my book support a person should first place his body inside the said loop by first disconnecting the strap 27 and then fastening the same in position, said strap fittingthe back of the person, who may then recline on a couch or sofa with the base plates 26 resting thereon; the open book may then be placed with its covers toward said backing plate 11 and the leaves kept in any desired position by means of said clamps 17.
When the person is lying flat on his back the backing plate 11 may be kept in the position shown in the drawings.
For any other position of the reader the backing plate 11 with the socket 14: may be shifted lengthwise said curved members 19 and 20 toward one end thereof; the said members and the strap 27 may also be placed at any desired angle to the body of the reader; the adjustment is completed by swiveling said plate 11 on said socket 14 through a certain angle.
The entire device is made very adjustable, collapsible and easy to fold; and the flexibility of the members 19 and 20 with the pivotal connection of said links 24: to said base plates 26 is designed to facilitate the adjustment of the book support.
Many changes could be made in the details of my book support without departing from the main scope of my invention.
I do not therefore restrict myself to the details as shown in the drawings; but I intend to include also all mechanicalequivalents and reasonably obvious modifications of the same Within the scope of my invention.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A book support for a person in a lounging position comprising a backing plate for a book, said backing plate having notches in its sides, a pair of clamps for the leaves of the book, said clamps .passing through said notches and being connected to each other by means of an elastic medium, said notches being adapted to permit books of various sizes to be placed on said backing plate, and a means for supporting said backing plate over the body of said person.
2. A book support for a person in a lounging position, comprising a backing plate for a book and a loop adapted to encompass the body of said person and to support said backing plate, said loop consisting of a bracket and a strap detachably connected thereto, said bracket beingconnected to said backing plate.
3. A book support for a person in a lounging position comprising a backing plate for a book and a loop adapted to encompass the body of said person and to support said backing plate, said loop consisting of a bracket, a pair of base plates at the lower 1ng position comprising a backing plate for end thereof and a strap detachably connected at each end thereof to said base plates, said bracket being connected to said backing plate.
4. A book support for a person in a lounging position comprising a backing plate for a book and a loop adapted to encompass the body of said person and to support said backing plate, said loop consisting of an extensible bracket anda strap detachably connected thereto, said bracket being connected to said backing plate. 5. A book support for a person in a lounging position comprising a backing'plate for a book anda loop adapted to encompass the body of said person, said loop consisting of a flexible bracket and a-strap detachably 0011-. nected thereto, said bracket being connected to said backing plate. 1
6. A book support for a person in a lounging position comprising a backing plate for a book, a flexible bracket connected thereto. a pair of base pl'atespivotally connected to said bracket at its end, and a strap detachably connected to-saidbase plates at each end thereof.
7 A book support for a person in a lounging position comprising a backing plate for a book, a bracket slidably connected thereto and a strap detachably connected to said bracket at each end thereof.
8. A book support for a person in a lounging position comprising a backing pl t f r a book, a bracket adapted to support said backing. plate, said bracket being adapted to bestride the body of said person and a. pair of base plates at each end of said bracket;
9. A book support for a person in a lounga book and a flexible bracket connected thereto said bracket consisting of a curvedstrip or strips of springy material and adapted to bestride the body of said person. i
