Application filed March 4, 1918. Serial No. 220,221.
of which the following is a full, clear, and
exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
a My invention relates to mattresses, and
particularly to mattresses in which provision is made for renovation and sanitation. Mattresses, especially when used by children or persons in poor health, require, in order to ice-maintained in perfect sanitary condition, to be frequently renovated, and to accomplish'tliis effectively the filling, whether of cotton, felt, hair, or other suitable material, should be removed from the cover or casing, and both parts separately renovated and exposed to the light and air. To accomplish this, in the case of the ordinary tufted mattresses, is a matter of great difficulty and delay, and consequently this highly necessary function is either entirely neglected or only partially,'and therefore ineli'ectually, performed. he provision of a mattress, in which the filling being inserted in sections, may be speedily removed with a minimum of labor is the chief object of my invention. A further object of my invention is the provision of a mattress having a casing which presents only smooth surfaces to the outside, thus avoiding the .usual recesses for the accumulation of dust and vermin found in the ordinary tufted mattresses.
Other objects of my invention will appear from the following detailed description thereof. v
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is-a perspective of a mattress constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective of one of the filling sections or strips.
The numeral 1 -indicates the casing of my new mattress. The said casing is, made of ordinary drill or other suitable fabric, and is, when filled, of generally rectangular shape, as shown. Partition strips 2, of the same material, are sewed at intervals between the upper and lower surface walls 3 and 4. The wall 4 is extended at the ends to provide flaps 5 and 6 to close the ends when the mattress has been filled; the said flaps being either stitched to the wall 3 or laced thereto as may be'preferable.
The filling for my new mattress consists of strips of cotton, felt, or other suitable Specification of Letters Patent. I Patenfed 0 1;. 18 1921.
From the foregoing description, the na-' .ture and value of my new mattress will be apparent. When the sections 7 have been inserted in the casing 1, the walls 3 and 4;
of said casing present smooth surfaces. In order to renovate the mattress it' is only necessary to remove the sections 7 by means of one of-the end grips 9 or 10. Both casingand filling strips may then be thoroughly cleaned and renovated, after which it is a matter of great simplicity again to assemble the casing and strips and to close the end flaps 5 and 6, when the mattress is again ready for use. Should either casing or one or more of the filling strips become so fouled as to be no longer fit for use the ruined part or parts may be replaced by new parts and a virtually new mattress obtained at a cost greatly less than the' original cost of the mattress.
As will be seen,,furthermore, a mattress constructed in acordance with the above description, may be conveniently rolled for transportation into much smaller dimensions Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- 'ters Patent is:
In a mattress in combination with a cas- -5 ing having a series of partitions dividing 1 said casing into compartments, of a series of resilient filling strips arranged to fit into said compartments, and a longitudinal line of stitching in each of said strips, independent of said casing, the ends of said 10 stitching extending beyond the ends of the ABRAHAM BERNsTEiN.
