Description

A. V. DA COSTA. TOY.I APPLICATION FILED FEB. 18, 1921.
1539426699 Patented Oct. 25, 1921.
,invention consists STATES,
ARTHUR 'V'. D COSTA, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
TOY.
Leonesa.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that LARTHUR V. DA COSTA, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at hrovidence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
lThis invention relates to improvements in the constructionV of toys, and has for its object to provide an animated toy having a bulbous body member having ahead member supported to roll about upon its upper surface, when agitated, to produce a life-like effect, Said head member being provided with means for returning it to an upright posi# tion after having been moved from such position and the body member also being provided with a weight near its bottom portion for the purpose of returning it together with its head member back to normal after having been moved from upright position.
f With these and of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claimse In the'accompanying drawing: A Figure l is an elevation illustrating on form of toy which may be made by my improved construction. u y
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation illustrating the mechanism by which .the head vmember may be rolled about upon the body member; and returned to upright position thereon also showingthe Weight for returning the body member and its head member to normal upright position after having been moved therefromn y F ig. 3 is a perspective view of thehead balancing rod, showing the wei ht at its lower end for supporting the head 1n upright posltion.
It is found very desirable to produce Ia form of animated toyin which the head member may be moved about upon the body member and to construct such a toy so that it is very'strong and durable, and one which will successfully withstand the heavy shocks and banging about which childrens toys are subjected to, without being broken; and the following is a detailed description of one meansby which such results may be accomplished `With reference to the drawing, 10 designates, the hollow bulbous body member of a toy which may' be madein-any suitable or Specication of Letters Patent.

desired shaped such as egg-shape, spherical or the like, and this body member is pref erably formed in halves, each half being pressed into the desired form and constructed of any suitable sheet material, preferably celluloid, the meeting edges 1l and l2 of these 'halves being designed to fit one within the other, which edges are connected together preferably by cement. In the bottom of this body member, I have mounted a weight 13 preferably of lead of the desired size and of a shape preferably to fit the inner vcircumference of the body, and 'I have provided a cap member 14 adapted to fit over the weight 13, the same being provided with a flange l5 which may be connected to the inner surface of the body member by cement or otherwise, for 'the purpose of fixing 'r securing the weight in position therein The upper portion of this body member is rovided with a hole member 17 which may be of any suitable vshape or size and to represent any desired object, the same being adapted to be supported upon the outer surface of the body member and to roll or mbve about thereon. In orderl to movably support this head upon the body member Ivhave provided a rod 18 with its upper end '19 extending through' an opening 20 in the upper wall of the head member, this opening being shown as provided with inturned lips or flanges 2l for engaging and supporting the upper end of the rod, the inturned flanges being so vformed as to provide a 'tapering opening for the purpose of receiving cement by w ich to more securely fasten the end of the rod to the upper wall of the head member. This rod preferably extends down-through the head member to fit tightly in a hole 22 in the lower wall .thereof and to extend through the enlarged hole 16 in the upper surface of the body down into said body in which it loosely fits, the lower end 23 of this ounted upon this body member is a head rod being provided with a Weight 24C which luloid various colors maybe employed in.
its construction which render the same handsome and attractive in appearance.
By formin the body portion in a spherical shape an mounting a weight-13 therein this body may be rolled about upon any surface, its rolling movement imparting a relative movement of the head member in the opposite direction, which is due tothe swinging of the weight on-the rod 23 within the body member thus giving to the toy a lifelike action which renders it very attractive and interesting.
Then by mounting the comparatively heavy weight 13 in the bottom of the body portion a gradually reducing rocking motion is imparted to the body portion as it is returning to its normally upright position.
The device is extremely strong and durable in construction and handsome and attractive in appearance.
The foregoing description is directed solely toward the construction illustrated,
' but I desire it to be understood that I re- I claim:
1. An y'animated body Imember having a head member mounted to roll about upon its upper surface, a balancing rod fixed in said head member and extending into said body toswing freely therein, said rod being weighted on its'lower end to return said yhead member when moved from upright position, and a weight also in said body for returning it with its moved therefrom.
2. Anpanimated toy comprising a bulbous body member having a head member mounted to roll about its upper surface, a balancing rod having its upper end secured in the 'head `member to upright position when upper Wall of said head member and extend- A ing down therethrough into said body mem-I toy comprising-a bulbous ber the lower end being weighted and arranged to swing freely `therein to automatically'return 'said head member when moved from upright position', a collar on said rod within said body member, and aweight secured to .the base portion of the body to return the same .with its head when movedfrom upright position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
