RALPH DORITY, or WASHINGTON, msTRIcToE \COLUMBIA, AND HAROLD w,
BBEINING, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASS IGNORS GEORGE EDWIN rams.
or oNE-Tnmn To comaIN n STATEMENT AND RETURN ENvELoE.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that we, RALPH DORITY and HAROLP W. BREINING, citizens of the United States of America, residing, respectively, at
Washington, Distri-ct of Columbia, and
Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Statement and Return-Envelope, of which the following is a specification, referencebeing had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates tostatement and return envelops and it has for its object to provide a device of this nature by virtue of which the Work incident to the sending out of monthly statements by gas companies, electric light companies and like public utilities may be greatly reduced and the chances of error in givin persons making remit- 2 tances proper are it, will be largely eliminated.
-While the envelop of the present invention has a wide range of usefulness in the field indicated, its use is not limited thereto since it may be employed in any connection where a statement or bill is to be sent and a remittance is to be received. Further objects and advantages of the in.- ventionwill be set forth in the detailed description which follows. In the accom anying drawing:
Figure 1 is a ront view of an envelop constructed in accordance, with the invention;-
Fig. 2 is a perspective view looking from the rear side of the envelop and with an intervening flap folded'to expose certain of the other parts; and A Fig, 3 is a vertical sectional view.
Like numerals designate 'c'orrespondingparts throughout the several figures of the drawin v The device of the present invention consists of an envelop comprising a body portion 5 having the front wall 6 and rear wall 5 7. A closure flap 8 is provided with mucila eor like sealing mediumindicated at 9. 0 far the structure is like any ord nary envelop but it diflers from other envelops with which ,we are familiar in that we pro- 6 vide an additional flap 10 that is attached Specification of Letters Patent.
I Application filed March '1,

to the rear wall 7 by a weakened line 11. The outer face of this flap 10 carries a statement'form 12 and the outer face of the rear wall 7 is provided with a corresponding statementiform. By inserting a piece of carbon paper between the flap 10 and the rear wall 7, the particular material filled in upon the form 12 will be reproduced upon the statement form 13 upon the outer face of the rear wall 7. *Thusthe statement will be in duplicate but one statement will be detachable and the other will constitute an integral part of the envelop and will lie in such is secured inclosed position by the mucilage 9. The outer face of the front wall of the envelop bears a return address, such as is in dicated at 1 1, and the statement form 12 bears address matter, such as is indicated at I 15, and whichlies in such position that when the entire structure comprised in the statement and the return envelop is inserted in an entirely separate sight envelop the ad dress matter will be visible through the opening of the sight envelop.
Since so many people pay their bills by check, it is' now the custom of public utility companies andthe like, to send out their bills insuch shape that the part showing the service rendered may be retained by the customer and another part may be detached Patented Dec. 27 19211.
position as to be concealed when the flap 8 and sent back to the company. Under these and return envelop is placed in an ordinary sight envelop be visible through the opening of said sight envelop, as before stated, and the postman will deliver the sight envelop with the statement and return envelop therein to Mr. Richard Gibson, 1012 East Vine street, Detroit, Michigan. The cusaddress matter 15 will, when the statement tomer upon receiving this statement and return envelop detaches the slip along the weakened line 11 and retains the same as his memorandum and receipt. He then places his check for the amount of the statement in the body ofthe envelop, seals the flap 8, which then conceals the statement form upon the outer face of the rear wall 7 and mails this return envelop back to the sender. This notonly insures that remittancesreturned to pay the amount of the statement will be properly addressed and properly received,
but it insures that there will come back with j the check or other remittance, the name of the person sending the remittance and an itemized statement of what the money is for.
While'we may secure the duplicate upon the rear wall 7 by placing-a sheet of carbon paper between the flap 10- and said rear.
' {vantages flowing from the'use of this device. Under present practice there is pro-; 'vided first an ordinary sight envelop ;.second a return envelop, :that is an ordinary envelop with the address of the company 'p'rinted thereon; and third, as an entirely separate unit, a bill comprising two parts, one of which is separable from the other and one part of which is to be retained by the customer and the other part is to be sent back V with the check or other remittance. It has envelops of their own with the possibility of making mistakes in the address, other been found that very frequentlycustomers do not use the return envelop but address customers use the return envelop but. send to be applied.
merely their check and do not return the part ofthe statement that is intended for the company, thus necessitating a search in the records to determine how the check is The device of the present invention obviates the foregoing difliculties by soasso- 1 ciating the part'that is to be returned to the 1 thing will come with it that will show how company, with thereturn envelop, that the two cannot be'separated, t hus insuring that when the return envelop comes back somethe money is. to be applied and who sent it. At the sametime itleaves in the customers hands a statement showing whatit is he has paid. for and this of necessity must be an exact copy of the statement that is returned to the company because it is a carbon copy of the same. We also contemplate the 'pro vision of-a weakened line 17 about the statement form. 13 to permit this form to be readily detached-from the remainder of the envelop for filing, if desired.
seen that wehave devised a unitary and integral structure which will facilitate the keeping of accounts of the character indicated and will avoid, or at least largely'reduce, the possibility of mistakes.
It is to be understood that the invention .is not limited to the precise construction set velop comprising a body portion and a sealing flap and bearing duplicate statement viforms, one of which is detachable and the other of which is upon an integral part of the envelop, the detachable statement form being so related to the body of the envelop as to leave the latter unimpaired for mailing after the detachable form has been detached.
2. A structure as recited in claim 1 wherein the detachable statement form bears address, matter in a position to be visible through the sight opening of a sight envelop when inserted therein.
' 3. A mailable statement and return envelop comprising a body portion, a sealing flap and an additional flap, .the latter flap and a portion of the envelop bearing duplicate statement forms, one of which is detachable and the other of which is upon an integral part of the envelop, said sealing fiap concealin the last named statement form, when folded to position to close the envelop.
4. A mailable statement and return envelop comprising a body portion, a sealing flap and a detachable flap secured to the body of the envelop alon the upper edge of the rear wall of. the ho y of the envelop, said detachable flap. and the rear wall of the body of the envelop bearing duplicate statement forms.
5. A structure as recited in claim 4 wherein the inner face of the detachable flap is provided with transfer material.
6. A structure as recited in claim 4 wherein said sealing flap is of a position'to overlie and conceal the rear face of the envelop when the envelop is sealed for mailing.
7. A structure as recited in claim 4 wherein the front wall of the envelop is provided with a return address.
8. A structure as recited inclaim 4; wherein the front wall of the envelo is provided with a return address and t e statement form upon the detachable flap comprises address matter in a position to be visible through the sight opening of a sight envelop when the statement and return envelop are .placed therein.
9. A mailable statement and return envelop comprising a body portion adapted to receive an ob'ect to be mailed, and a sea1- ing flap of sue shape as to substantially cover the rear Wall of the envelop when sealed down thereon, in combination with a detachable flap bearing a statement form and overlyin the rear face of the body portion of the envelop to permit of the transfer of matter entered upon said statement form, to the said rear face of the body portion.
In testimony whereof we hereunto afiix our signatures.
RALPH DORITY. HAROLD W. BREINING.
