Be it known that I, PIERRE LOUBET, citizen of the French Republic, residing at Paris, Department of the Seine, in France, (and having I. O. address 12 Rue Victor Duruy, in the said cty,) have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Apparatus for Underground umping, (for which I have filed application for Letters Patent in France September 21, 1917, Patent No. 486,897, May 15, 1918,) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has for its objectl to effect improvements `in pumps and consists in an addition to the latter of a tube having a strainer which is situated some meters below the stratum of water and is surrounded by a cylindrical layer of Loire sand which has been carefully washed, the object being to insure a constant supply from any underground water stratum, even when the pumping is interrupted, and also to purify the water and render it potable.
The invention is described herewith in detail with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows diagrammatically by way of example one form of construction of the pumping and filtering apparatus.

attached to it a tube 4 which is sunk into the ground vertically to a certain vdepth below the water stratum. It is understood that the filtering layers of charcoalor any other appropriate material are only employed when the water is impure and it is desired to render it t for consumption while in ordinary cases it suffices to ill the boring containing the pipe and the strainers with Loire sand. i
The object of this arrangement is to secure a constant supply from an underground water stratum by means of apump,l forv which the apparatus described forms an indispensable addition. n
If'for example the water stratum becomes exhausted at a certain moment, the apparatus nevertheless continues to operate in consequence of the large reserve column of water which, while it is being pumped out, permits the Water stratum to regain its level.
