To all whom it may a-oem:
QUARNSTROM, a citizenv of the United States,
and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Adjustable Holders for Flash Lights, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in holders for flashlights. and it consists in the combinatlons, constructions and arrange-` ments herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a holder for a flashlight or the like that is readily portable and is providedwith adjustable means whereby the device can -be mounted upon a hat, coat, or other article of apparel'of the operator, and the light from the flashlight may be directed as. desired without it being necessary to hold the device in the hand.
A fu-rther object of my invention is -to provide a device of the type described that is adapted for mounting on a fixed support, such as a nail or the like.
A further object of my` invention is to provide a device of the type described that.
is simple in construction, effective for the purpose intended, and thoroughly practical commercially.
Other objects and-advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My `invention is illustrated initheaccompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which- VFigure 1 is a side lelevation of the device, showing a flashlight engaged thereby,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the device, the handle portion thereof being'shown at right angles to the position occupied by the same in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a plan view ofthe device, Figure 4 is a section along the line 4-4 of Figure 1, l
Figure 5 is a front view of the device, the upper portion thereof being broken away, and
Figure 6 is a section along the line 6-6 of Figure 2.
I am aware that prior to my invention holders for flashlights have been provided. I am not aware however of any such device having adjustable means adapted for engaging an article of apparel or the like in such a manner that the light from the flashlightmay be directed as desired, as upon work engaging the attention of theoperator, with the necessity for holding the device in the hand obviated. j
. In carrying out my invention, I provide a case embodying a flat body portion 1, having ends 2 and 3 and parallel sides 4. and 5. The .lower end 3 has a disk extension 6 providing a base for va cylindrical flashlight 7. The sides 4 and 5 are formed with pairs of arm extensions 8 and 9, and 10 and 11 respectively, these extensions being curved to embrace the flashlight 7 as shown. y
-The casing is provided'with a combination outer cover and'handle 13 having sides 14 and 15 designed to straddle and snugly fit the sides 4 and 5 of the casing. The sides of the handle 'are enlarged at 14 and 15 adjacent their lower ends, and are rotatably mounted on a pivot pin 16 that is projected through the walls 4 and 5 of the casing. The enlarged port-ions'14 and 15 have a plurality of spacedapart inwardly extend-- ing projections 17j- .17 arranged in the' arc of a circle and these projections successively engage projecting walls 18-18 extending outwardly from openings in the contiguous surface of the sides 4and 5. The sides 14 and l5 are fashioned with extensions 19 and 20 which are bent inwardly and then outwardly, as clearly shown in Figure 4 of the drawings, t0 engage with the edges of the lthe outer cover are formed ,with a plurality of registering openings 21 and 22 respectively and these openings can be projected over the head of a nail or like support, when the handle is in the position relative to the casing illustrated in Figure l' and the' device thus maintained in a desired positlon as when not in use, wherefore theV loss of the flashlight 7 or accidental injury thereto may be prevented. In addition, a portion'of the body portion of the combination outer cover and handle is bent outwardly to provide a clip 23, as clearly shown inthe drawing.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The
casing of the device andthe handle therefor arepreferably made of material havin in herent spring qualities and a flash ight placed Vin the position shown inFigure 1 will be held in such position by'the pairs of extensionsto the sides 4 and 5, such' exten` sions bein in fact spring clamping mem bers. It will be observed that the extensions 8 and 9 are curved outwardly at 8 and 9 respectively and that the extensions 10 and 11 are curved outwardly at l0 and l1 1n a like manner, wherefore 'the extensions 8 Land 9, and 10 and 11 are sprung outwardly by stress applied to a'fiashlight and held against the same at the outer ends thereof and the flashlight` can be readily movedinto the'position shown, the extensions thenl mov- -ing to initial position and clamping the flashlight. When the combination outer cover and handle portion occupies the position relative the casing shown in Figure 1, the registering openings 2l and 22 can be lprojected-over the head of a nail or-'the ike and the device will 'be thus maintained in a fixed position. The clip 23 is adapted for engaging a 'coat pocket, button hole, hat
band, or like article of apparel and the de-j vice can be secured to the clothing of an o rator when in the condition shown in igure 1, or when the handle of the device has been moved aboutfits pivot toward the position illustrated in Figure 2, On account of the engagement of the projections 17-417 with the openingV having projecting j walls 18-18, the casing will be maintainedl in adjusted position relative to the handle and the'light from the flashlight *canthen Y' be directed as desired and the operator will i have both-hands free for performing work or for other uses. Obviously the device,
