Description

P. sows-)- HOSPITAL BED.

INVENTOR PATENT OFFICE.
PETER SOLTYS', or snnn'ron, oonnncrreur.
HOSPITAL BED.
Application filed September 12, rear.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER SoLTYs, a citizen of Poland, residing at Shelton, county of Fairfield and State of connecticut have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hospital Beds of' which the following is a specification.-
The present invention relates to improvements in beds, particularly hospital beds, and it is the principal object of the invention to provide abed enabling the patient or an attendant toregulate theposition' of the patient according to wish or requirement so that he can either repose in a horizontal position or can assume a recumbent position most convenient and comfortable to him as desired. I
Another object of the invention is the provision of means'for locking the parts in their adjusted positions.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of the table which is so combined with the foot rest as to be in front of the patient when he is in sitting position or to be folded flat againstthe'foot board when the patient is horizontally reclining on the bed.
Further objects and advantages of my novel bed will become more fully apparent from the following description and will then be more specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed constructed according to the present invention. v
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the bed on line 2-2of Figure 1.
The numerals 10 and 11 designate respectively the foot and head frames of a conventional type of bed which are connected by the customary removable side rails 12 and 13.
A stationary transverse rail 14 connects both side rails intermediate their ends.
Two other transverse rods 15 and 16 are secured with their ends in the side rails and carry longitudinally arranged, parallel slats 17 and 18 forming a seat part. I
To the rail 14 are pivotally secured the inner ends of the side bars 19 and 20 of a foot rest frame, the outer ends of which are connected by a transverse bar 21. In the upper face of bar 21 is anchored as at 22 the lower end of a curved rod 23, the upper end of which is loosely guided within a sleeve 2% Specification of Letters Patent.
I Patented Mar. 7, Serial No. 500,152.
18 and the bars 12 and 13" are secured to the rod 27-the lower recessed ends'of the side bars 28 and 29 of a head rest frame, the upper ends of which are connected by a trans verse bar 80.
A longitudinally extending rod 31 is anchored with its upper end as at 32 in approximately the center of bar 30 while its lower end is integral with bar 27, and is then bent downwardly as indicated at 33 to end into an eye 34:.
To this eye is attached one end of a rod 35 the other endof which is secured to bar 21 in approximately its center. 7
To a transverse rod 36-having its ends journaled in the side bars 12 and 13, a bar 37 is secured in approximately the middle of .said rod orinade integral therewith. The
upper end of this'rod carries a guide socket 38 sliding along rod 31 during the operation of the head rest frame.
. One end of the rod 36 is extended through the side bar 12 and is formed at the outside thereof into a handle 39 to whichis pivotally secured as at 40 a locking rod or bar tL-the lower end of which is formed into a hook 42 adapted to engage any of the holes 48 in a segmental plate 1 1, the ends of which are secured to bar 12. The side bars 28' and 29 are provided with recesses tfi and 16 in their lower edges engaging the bar 36 when the device is to be used as a bed.
The device operates as follows When the patient desires to use the device as a bed. the parts will assume the position shown in Figure 2.
If it is now desired to raise the head of the patient and to lower his legs in order to bring him into a sitting position, the lever 39 is turned with rod 86, and this movement will be communicated to rod 31 to elevate the head rest frame to any position desired in which it is locked by the operation of member 41 engaging with its hook 42 any of the holes 43 of the segment 44. The movement of the head rest frame is also communicated to the rod 27 and by means of its connections 33 and 35 to the front rest frame, which will move downward. On account of the connection 23 between the table 25 and the transverse rod 21 of the foot rest the table will participate in the downward. movement of the foot rest and will thus be ready for use in front of the patient.
Changes may be made in the construction of the minor details and general arrangement without departing from the scope and spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is--- l. A bed of the class described comprising a frame, a foot rest and a head rest pivotally secured in said frame, a seat part between both of said rests, connections be tween said foot rest and said head rest, means for operating said head and foot rest to adjust the same at any desired angle to the seat part, means for locking the parts in their adjusted positions, a plate and, means for connecting said plate to the bed and foot rest for following the movement of the latter to be set up as a table in front of a sitting patient or to be folded against the foot support when the device is used as a bed.
2. A bed of the class described comprising a frame, a foot rest and a head rest pivotally secured with their inner ends in said frame, a seat part between both rests, a transverse bar in said frame underneath the head rest, a connection between the head rest and the foot rest, a rod secured at one end to said transverse bar, a guide socket on the other end of said rod adapted to slidably engage the said connection to raise and lower the head rest, means for operating said rod to adjust the head and foot rests, means to lock the parts in their adjusted positions, a table and means connected to said foot rest and the table to move the same in and out of its operative position.
3. A bed of the character described comprising, a frame, a seat part in said frame, a transverse rod rotatably secured in said frame in rear of said seat, a head rest having its lower ends secured to said rod, a connection. between the upper bar of the head said eye and with its other end to the lower transverse bar of the foot rest, means for operating said head rest to adjust it in any angle to the bar, means for locking the parts in their adjusted position, a plate coupled to said foot rest and adapted to be swung down into operative position to be used as a table in front of said seat when said foot rest is in working position. and to be swung against the face of the foot frame when in its position of rest.
4. A bed of the character described, comprising a frame, a seat in said frame, a transverse rod in said frame in front of said seat, a foot rest pivotally secured with its inner enc s to said rod, a transverse rod pivotally secured to said frame in rear of said seat, a head rest secured with its inner ends to said rod, a bar secured to the upper transverse bar of said head rest and to said rotatably arranged transverse rod, a lower bar integral with said bar and having an eye in its lower end, a rod connected. with one end to said eye and with its other end to the transverse frame of said foot rest, a rod rotatably secured in said frame behind and below the head rest, having its outer end projecting from said frame, a bar on said rod, a guide socket on said bar adapted to slide on said rod having a lower eye, a handle at the outer end of said rotatable rod, a locking lever, a perforated segment on the side bar of the bed frame, said locking lever provided with a hook adapted to engage in the openings of said segment and a plate connected to a bar connecting the posts of the foot support, to swing around the same, a connection between said plate and said transverse bar of the foot rest for swinging into working position as a table upon the operation of said handle and to swing back into its position of rest when the device is to be used as a bed. v
In testimony whereof I have atlixed my signature.
PETER- SOLTYS.
