WHEEL roe AUTOMOBILES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lSTIlOWIl that I, Jnssn PRUn'rT J more, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Shelby ille, in the county of Bedford and State of Tennessee. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVheels for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates in general to wheels for automobiles or the like, and more particularly to a demountabl'e rim therefor.
The object of the invention is to provide a demountable rim of this character which is of P'fltl'Qll'ltl) simple and durable construclion reliable in operation and easy and in expensive to manufacture; which may be easily assembled with and disassembled from the wheel; which is automatically locked in assembled position and which when assembled is positively secured against and effective to withstand lateral as well as radial thrust.
Other objects and advantages of the invention reside in certain novel features of (finish-notion, combination and arrangement 0 f parts which will be hereinafter more fully desrril ed and )articularly pointed. out in the appended claims, refercncebeing had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this SIIQClfiCiI'ElOD and in which:
Figure 1 a fragmentary view in side elevation, parts being broken away for the sake of illustration;
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view, on line 2-2 of Figure 1; and
Figure 53 is a transverse sectional view on line of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings wherein for the sake of illustrat-ionis shown the preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 10 designates generally a wheel or the like which includes as usual a hub 11 spokes 12 and a felly 13. The felly in the present invention however is of a special construction, being preferably constituted by an annular channel of steel or the like, as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3. The channel includes as usual a base 1 1 and side flanges 15.
Rollers designated generally at 16, are mounted on the channel constituting the felly at regular intervals about the circumference thereof. These rollers are preferably of spool-like form having a central hub or body portion 17 and heads 18 at tech Specification of Letters Patent. pai ntefl June 20, Application filed May 7, 1921.

2 for in. the side flanges lo of the felly. The lateral faces of the heads 19 from which the trunnions 20 project are smooth so that the rollers are readily rotated on their trunnions 20.
A demountable rim designated at 21, is mounted on the folly and is provided at spaced intervals around its inner periphery or circumference with inwardly extending lugs 22, there being one of such lugs for each roller 16 provided on the felly. These lugs 22 have their inner surface 23 inclined and these surfaces are all inclined in the same direction. The lateral faces of the lugs are also inclined as designated at 2 1, correspondingly with the inclination of the faces 19 of the rollers. As shown in the drawings, the faces 28 of the lugs bear upon the body portion or hub 17 of the rollers and the lateral faces 24 of the lugs bear upon the inclined faces 19 of the heads of the rollers. In order to permit assembly of the demountable rim upon the folly one of the side flanges is provided with a plurality of notches designated at 25, adjacent each roller, as shown in Figure 1. As shown in Figures 2 and 8, the other side flange 15 of the felly is provided with an extension 26 upon which the inner side of the rim bears.
Means is provided for imparting relative rotary motion to the demountable rim with respect to the telly and includes a segmental ring gear 27 fixed to the under side of the rim and adapted to be meshed with a driving pinion 28 journaled in the side flanges of the felly and having a squared extension 80 on the shaft adapted to be engaged with an operating tool or the like. c A spring pressed plunger 31, is arranged in the folly and is adapted to be engaged with the ring gear 27 to lock the ring gear in adjusted position. The spring pressed plunger is provided with a hand grip 32 whereby it may be withdrawn against the action of the spring to permit disassembly of the rim.
In practice, the demountable rim may be easily assembled and disassembled as in as sembling it is only necessary to aline the notches 25 with the lock lugs 22 and then move the rim laterally until it is on the felly YVhen it is well on the felly a suitpermit passage of said loch lugs, and means 5 able operating tool is engaged with the for rotating said rim relatlve to sald telly. squared extension to rotate the pinion 28 3.
