FOLDABLE CARTON.

application alec august 2, 1919. serial no.
To all whom. it in concern Be it known that I, ERICH STIEUDEL, a citi- 1n zen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefulv Improvements in Foldable Cartons, of which the tion. 4
My invention relates to improvements in foldable cartons, and has for its object the provision-of an improved construction of following is a specificathis character, capable of being made up into various forms and shapes, the present invention being an improvement over that disclosed inmy prior patent, vgranted November 21,1916. l
yThe invention consists in the combinations and arran ement's .of parts hereinafter described an claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in Which,
Fig. 1 is a.
or Hat. Y Fig. 2 is a. perspective View of a five-,sided plan view of a. carton, distendcarton made from the construction.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a four- .sided .carton made from the construction.
F ig. 4 is a perspective view of a triangular cartpn made from the construction.
Fig. 5 is a rspective view of a. circular carton made flim the construction. g
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a. strip 6 of box board or like material, having a. plucreases 7 positioned thereon at equal distances apart, said creases ing or'corner-bending of the strip when said strip is looped. in one direction, soas to form rectilinear figures, as illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, and to prevent this breakmg or corner-bending when the strip is lopm in the o posite direction, so as to form a circular gure, as illustrated in Fig. 5. At one end the strip 6 is providedwith a tongue 8, and slits 9 are provided, as shown, in each of the last three of the sections of said strip, defined by the creases 7, said slits 9 being adapted to receive and interlock with the tongue 8, as indicated. Bythis arrangement, the strip 6 may be bent into and sespeciacation of Letters raten.
at one end of said as shown,` being formed to cause break-- ratentea .nny is, ieee. 314,862.
cured ineither rectilinear form, as indicated Figs. 2,. 3 and 4, orv in circular form, as indicated in Fig. 5. The slits 9 arrangedin different sections of the strip 6, permit of thevarious adjustments thereof to form the rectilinear figures, and also permit of adjustments in the size of the circular ligures. In this way, the carton is adapted to a great variety of uses and to fit a. objects of dii'erent shape, protecting said articles from injury in transportation. Usually the articles are wrapped in wrapping paper after being surrounded by the carton, which, of course, serves to further protect the same. v
While I have illustrated and-described the preferred form ofoonstruction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited lto the precise details of the construction set forth,l
ut desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims. y
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A foldable carton comprising a strip of flexible 'material transversely creased for bending along a plurality of lines adapted to form the corners of a carton having a desired plurality of sides; a plurality of slits in a plurality of said sides; and a securin ton e strip adapted to seIeuctively engaged with said slits to form a carton of various desired sizes and shapes, sub-- stantially as described.
2. A foldable carton comprising astrip of Hexible f material' transversely creased for bending in one direction only along a plurality of lines adapted to form the corners of a carton having'a. lurality of sides; a. plurality of slits in a p urality of said sides; and a securingtongue at one end of said strip adapted to be selectively engaged with said slits *to* provide a carton capable of changein size and shape, substantially as described. I
3. A vfoldable carton' comprising a. strip of iexible materia-1 transversely creased for bending along a pluralit! of lines equally spaced apart and adapte to form the corlarge variety of name t@ this speccaton in ih@ psfnce of wo sub-scmbmg Wlmesss.
