CANDLE HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1, 1922.
Application filed February 17, 1920. Serial No. 359,279.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLAFFA A. LARSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butte, in the county of Silverbow, State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candle Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in candle holders and particularly to candle holders for use on Christmas trees.
One object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved candle holder which will receive and hold candles of different diameters.
Another object is to provide a novel and improved device of this character in which the element of safety against fire is effectively provided for.
Another object is to provide a novel and improved device of this character wherein the socket which receives the candle is formed integrally with the stem which has the branch engaging hook and of such con struction that the last part of the burning wick of the candle will be properly smothered to prevent burning of the tree.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the candle holder supported on a branch of a tree.
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical longitudinal central sectional view through the holder, showing the closed lower portion which smothers the wick.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing the candle holder is formed from a single length of suitable wire and includes the stem portion 10 bent into substantial S-form to form the hook 11 for engagement on the branch of the Christmas tree, a weight 12 of any desired character being secured to the lower end of the stem to hold the same in vertically depending position below the tree branch, as clearly seen in'Figure 1 of the drawing. The upper end of the stem is formed into an upwardly widening series of spiral coils 13, it being noted, however, that the lower coils for about one-half of the length of the socket formed thereby are close together. This forms a closed receptacle for the retention of the last portion of the burning wick of the candle and of the last portion of the wax, all of which are disposed completely above the tree branch.
The upper coils are disposed in spaced relation above each other and are adapted to expand and contract so that the base of the candle, placed within the socket, will be firmly gripped by said coils. By reason of the fact that the coils gradually become wider toward the upper end of the socket member candles of different diameters may 'be placed in the holder.'
' The present device performs functions which the others perform but consists of a novel and improved combination and ar rangement of parts wherein all of the functions of both of these previously patented devices are combined in a. single device which is simple and cheap in its construction.
What is claimed is:
1. An integral candle holder comprising an upper open resilient helix portion to grip the body of a candle, and a lower inverted conical helix portion axially alined therewith and having its lower end closed to receive and hold the candle wick stub when released from the melted body material of the candle.
2. An integral candle holder comprising an upper open resilient helix portion to grip the body of a candle, and a lower inverted conical helix portion axially alined therewith and having its lower end closed to receive the candle wick stub when released from the melted body material of the candle, the mutually adjacent convolutions of the conical helix portion being in mutual contact.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
OLAFFA A. LARSON. Witnesses PHILo C. HANsoN,
