Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.142,588, dated September 9, 1873; application filed July 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
1 of Maine, have invented certain new and useful ImprovementsinIron-Workin g Machines and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the bed of the metal'bender. Fig. 3 is a top plan of a cam and lever for operatin g the iron upsetter. Fig. 4 is the piece which, in conjunction with Fig. 2, forms the metal bender. Figs. 5 and 6 show parts of a device to be used as a countersink and ironupsetter. Fig. 7 is a detail of a device for bending iron into a V shape or to form a square.

Letters Patent of the United States have already been granted me, ,Nos. 117,116 and 128,758, respectively, for machines for cutting, punching, and upsetting metal. The object of my present invention is the production and arrangement of certain devicesand methods for operating them, by which certain new operations can be performed which were not included in the patents above named.

All the various operating parts shown in the V drawings are moved by pulling down the handlever a, with the exception of the tire-upsetter, which is actuated by its own levers 0 0. The
operation, however, of this device issimilar to that described in former Letters Patent No. 128,758. It is differently arranged upon the frame of the machine.
Within the parts of the frame f is a vertical carriage, f which is operated by the cam or eccentric d pressing upon the top thereof at q,
as illustrated in Fig. 1. By drawing down upon the hand-lever a the cam cl is so moved or rotated as to push the carriage downward within the frame f. When so pushed down,
spring sis attached to this lever, and so when 1 the power is removed from the carriage the contraction of the spring draws up the lever and the carriage. By the descending motion of the carriage the vise is operated by the tipping of the bent lever 41 pivoted in the frame of the machine, shown in Fig. 1. This draws one jaw of the vise along the horizontal track to until it closes with the other jaw. When the bent lever so tips, it bears against a bed, w, to be used as a bending device for the purpose of bending horseshoes. Of the curved cutters, or those for cutting round or .rod iron illustrated at y, the upper portions move with the carriage, the lower are fixed. The downward motion of the carriage brings the two sets of knives together and effects the operation of cutting. The same description is true of the shears j j, but the upper one has an inclined edge, so as to produce a drawing out upon the metal.
The punchers m are attached to the lower end of the carriage f, and are forced down upon their bed by the movement of the carriage. Holes are made in the bed to receive the punchers, and both can be made of such forms and sizes as may be necessary. The V-shaped metal bender Z has the pivoted portion 2, into and against which the movable portion is forced by the downward motion of the carriage, as before described. This is used for bending metal into a V shape or for forming square corners.

and 4. Fig. 2 is the bed or lower portion, and
is supported upon the top of the two projecting parts a a. Fig. 4 has two recesses, 12,
which receive the projections c c fastened to the movable carriage f. When the carriage ispushed downward the project-ions upon it, c, are brought nearer to the fixed projections a a When Figs. 2 and 4 are in their places thereon the lower curved portion of Fig. 4 is forced into the concave upper edge or surface of Fig. 2., The iron to be bent being placed upon the top of Fig. 2, is, by the pressure of the lower convex edge of Fig. 4, bent into the desired shape.
Fig. 6 shows a device for upsetting iron. when used in conjunction with Fig. 3 placed upon the pivot 00*. The iron is placed in the hole 11 and then by the movement of the part shown in Fig. 3, the movable part g is forced up against the other portions of the device, and thus produces the desired effect.
Fig. 4 shows the axle-tree bender. This has two recesses, b N, to receive the projections c c, as before described. The axle-tree to be bent rests upon the supports d d. Then by the downward motion of the movable carriage the convex portion of Fig. 4 bends the axletree to the desired curvature.
The spring 8 may be either metal or rubber, and if desired can be differently arranged to force up the carriage.
To insure the certain upward movement of the carriage f, andnot be dependent upon the spring 8, a rod can be connected to the upper part of said carriage and the arm 0. Thus, when so arranged, if the hand-lever is raised and the parts being connected, as described, the carriage will be raised also. The eccentric d is to be provided with cogs which fit into cogs on the top of the carriage f. On the inside of the frame f, as shown by dotted lines are the cogs 1", into which fit the cogs s on the hand-lever a. This lever can be raised or lowered according as to the purchase de' sired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The movable carriage f operated by means of the hand-lever a, connecting-rod b, cam d, and spring 8, as hereindescribed, in combination with the vise, the horseshoe-bender, the metal bender, the axle-tree bender, the round or bolt iron cutter, the shears, the bender to bend iron intosa V or square shape, and the punchers, as herein set forth.
