  • My invention relates to a press for setting metal rims in wheels in which the spokes have become loosened. It is generally known that at the present time automobile wheels are manufactured having pressed steel rims into which the ends of the wooden spokes of the wheel are'fitted, and that in certain climates, and at certain seasons of the year the wooden spokes shrink in size and become loose in the rim. My device relates to a new and novel tool for tightening such spokes in the rim, or felly of the wheel by depressing a portion of the rim until it tightens around the end of the spoke.

To all whom t may concern.' j Be it known that I, PETER C. SEEBERG, citizen of the United States, and resident of Clovis, in the county of Fresno and the State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Presses for Setting Metal F ell-y Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a press for setting metal rims in wheels in which the spokes have become loosened. It is generally known that at the present time automobile wheels are manufactured having pressed steel rims into which the ends of the wooden spokes of the wheel are'fitted, and that in certain climates, and at certain seasons of the year the wooden spokes shrink in size and become loose in the rim. My device relates to a new and novel tool for tightening such spokes in the rim, or felly of the wheel by depressing a portion of the rim until it tightens around the end of the spoke.
I accomplish the object set forth, and other objects hereinafter set forth by means of the device hereinafter described and illustrated on the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l shows a perspective view of the tool complete attached to an upright post. Figure 2 is a perspective View of a set. Figure 3 is a perspective view of the die used with the set shown in Figure 2. Figure 4 is the base of the tool for holding the die. Figure 5 shows a part of a wheel indicating in section the spoke, the felly, and portions of the die press, the die and the set in active relation. Figure 6 is a modied form of set. v
In said drawing B is an upright post to which a press C is attached. The press consists of a main support 4:, having at the bottoni thereof a base 9, and at the top a pivot support 4t, a lever 2 pivoted at oiieend. to support 4, a set guide 6, a set holder 5 which is adapted to operate in a slideway in guide 6, and a toggle link 3 pivoted at one end to handle 2 and at the other end to set holder 5. The set is shown as 8. The press C is assembled so that the set holder 5 can be moved vertically in line with base 9. j
The die 10 is constructed of a tubular portion lOa having a shoulder or outward proj ecting flange 1l. The top 12 of the flange is adapted to be the face of the die and should be formed oval. The hole through the die is countersunk in the face of the die. This die is longitudinally cut in halves so it can be readily placed around the spoke of a wheel Vas shownin Figure 5. press is. formed 4annular with a section 9a removed` therefrom. press is constructed so that when the wheel j is in the position described on the press base, the set can Vreadily be moved so it eiicircles the tubular projection into which the tenon of the spoke wasinserted. When the rim of the wheel is thus between the die and the set described, it will be noted that by forcing the set adjacent to the face felly will be depressed around the spoke to meet the shoulder of the tenon 13a. If it is desired to shrink the hole in the tubular projection 15', the set 18 shown in Figure 6 can be used in which the opening Saa is formed tapelring. Different forms of sets can 'be usec.
It is also noted that instead of the press C described, the same results can be accomplished by using a hammer or other equivalent to actuate the set.
I claim as new and ask for Letters Patent:
l. A tool for tightening the spokes of a wheel having metal rims with tubular projections formed thereon into which ends of the spokes are inserted, consisting of a die having an opening therethrough adapted to fit around a spoke,said die having a flange thereon forming the face of the die, and a countersink in the face of the flange having a common center with the opening, the die beingcut in halves along the line of the diameter of the hole, a die holder consisting of a ring with a sector cut away7 the opening in or uit die the the ring formed by the cut-away sector being adapted to admit a spoke therethrough and the inside diameter of the ring being adapted to receive the die so that the flange of the die will rest on the topto the ring, a set having an annular 'aceadapted to lit around the tubular projection and Within the countersink, and means for forcing the die and the set adjacent to each other.
