DELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
KELLY, BOTH 0F PHILA- NURSING BOTTLE.
Application led December 23, 1921. Serial No. 524,352.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT J. HAcER'rY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, county of Phila.
delphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful lmprovement in Nursing Bottles, of whichtlie following is a specification.
The present invention hasrelati'on to the type of nursing bottle described 1n my copending application for patent as filed April 27, 1921 and serially numbered 464,830 and has for its leading object to improve and better the construction thereof in order to provide a more efficient and commercially useful article. A further object resides in the provision of general arrangements, connections and combinations of parts for attaining the results set forth iii the foregoing object.
The invention consists of the improvements hereinafter described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more fully understoodv from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which- I Fig. 1, is a View in elevation, partly sectioned,'of a nursing bottle embodying features of the invention.
Fig. 2, is a top or plan View of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3, is a view in elevation, upon a reduced scale of the nipple closureand its lock-ring disengaged from a nursing bottle, and t Fig. 4, is a view in elevation, partly sectioned, of a nursing bottle embodying a slightly modified form.
For the purpose of illustrating my .invention l have shown in the accompanying drawings two forms thereof which are at present preferred by ine, since the same have been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to beunderstood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be v ariously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
In the drawings and referrinel to Fi 1 to 3, 1Q designates the body ofba nursitfig` bottle, preferably formed of glass, which body terminates in a substantially conical neck 1l the mouth of which is provided with a bead to accommodate a nipple 13. Ad- ]acent the ]uncture' of said body and neck the bottle is exteriorly screw-tlireaded as at 14 and the bottom of the bottle is provided with a similar screw-threaded portion 15 the uses for both of which will presentlv appear. yAdapted to be detachably secured with respect to the nursing bottle is a nipple closure, cover or protector which is also preferably made of glass. 1t comprises an imperforate dome 16 terminating in a depending portion or skirt 17. The rim of the skirt is designated 19 to which is fitted the annular recessed portion 19 of a lock-ring 20. The ring is so positioned with respect to .said bead that while it is secured thereto it is freeto be rotated therearound. Thus in removing the nipple closure the two may b e lifted .from the bottle together. The lockring is interiorly provided vwith a screwthreaded portion for cooperatively engaging the screw-threads of tlie bottle and is provided with an annular flanged part 21 for bearing upon the rim 19 of the skirt 17. With nipple closure in proper position the rim 19 of skirt 17 is preferably free of the bottle neck so that the lock-ring when screwed to place clamps the parts as shown in Fig. 1. The juncture of the dome 16. and skirt 17 forms an internal shoulder 28 which abuts against that part of nipple 13 fitting over the bead of the bottle neck and forms an air-tight joint, since the nipple is of yielding material, as rubber, and it is possible to draw the shoulder 23 very tightly against said nipple. When the nipple closure is removed from the bottle neck it may, if desired, be secured to the bottle bottom by causing the lock-ring to engage screwthreads 15.
In Fig. 4, there is shown a bottle-having' a large mouth. Immediately above the screw-threaded portion of the body is an annular portion 24 of smaller diameter than the bottle body. The portion 24 is provided with a bead 25' to receive the nipple.` 26 designates an inverted cup-shaped nipplec-losure the lower part of which is adapted ipo i to *clamp the nipple between it and part 24 of the bottle when the lock-ring is secured to place. A
Among the advantages claimed for the above described nursing bottle mention may be made of the following (a) A hermetical sealing of the bottle i contents is secured thereby maintaining the same free from the attack of germs and other exterior matter, flies, insects and the like.
(Z7) A closure is provided which positively prevents leakage of the bottle contents.
(c) Means is provided the bottle. by which the nipple-closure mayv be attached to the bottle bottom whilst the bottle is being filled or otherwise used.
(d) rlhe lock-ringis part of the nippleclosure so that the two may be removed together.
lt will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while I have in the-present instance shown and described the preferred' embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory land reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modiication in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope Vof the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim is:
l. ln an article of the character stated a bottle provided with an external screwthreaded portion that portion ,of the bottle above said screw-threaded portion being of smaller diameter and provided with a bead, a nipple engaged over said bead, a nipple closure having an imperforate dome tted over 'said ni ple in impinging relationl with that part o the nippleengaging over said iaaaees bead and a lock-ring engaging the screwthreaded portion of said bottle tor clamp` ing said nipple closure upon said bottle.
2. A construction as described in claim 1, characterized by said lock-ring being secured to said nipple closure but reeto be skirt and screw-threaded portion for causing said shoulder to abut against that part of the nipple engaging said bead with the rim4 of said skirt positioned above that part of the bottle neck immediately above said screw-threaded part.
5. Inan article of the character stated a bottle externally lprovided with means for cooperatively receiving a locln'ng-device, that portion of the -bottl'e above said means being of .smaller diameter and provi with a bead, a nipple engaged over said bead,
a nipple closure having an imperforate dome v fitted over said nipple in impinging relation with that part of the nipple .engagingl over said bead 4and a locking-device engaging said means whereby the nipple closure may be drawn toward the bottle to wf. e the'impinging relation of said closure` with the nipple.
ln testimony whereof, l have hereunto signed my name.
ROBERT J. HAGERTY.
