BOX FASTENEB.
Application filed February 10, 1921. Serial No. 443,751.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANLEY II. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have made an Invention'Appertaining to Box Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates particularly to fasteners for the covers of pasteboard or other similar boxes, and has for its obj ect the provision of a simple, inexpensive and highly efficient fastening means of this character, which is separate from the box and is adapted to be easily and quickly applied thereto to secure the body and cover together in closed relation.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of a box in perspective, with a part of the cover broken away and with a pair of fasteners embodying the invention applied thereto but not in clinched engagement therewith. Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof with the fasteners clinched in holding relation to the box body and cover. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the fasteners, and Fig. 4L is a section thereof on the line 44 in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a box of the pasteboard type having the customary telescoped bottom and cover portions 2 and 3, respectively.
The fastener embodying the invention is preferably made of a light form of easily bendable sheet metal, and, in its present embodiment, comprises a body part 4 of narrow elongated form with one end pointed or made in V-shape, as shown at 5, to adapt it to be forced through the box material. The other end of the fastener is provided with a il-shaped head or enlargement 6 to adapt it to be forced through the material of a box. This head, in the pres ent instance, at its inner end is broader than the body member 4 and has a finger 7 proecting therefrom at each side of the body portion for a distance toward the pointed end 5 thereof. The inner end of the head 6 is slightly offset from. the body portion 4, as shown atS, so as to dispose the fingers 7 in slightly spaced parallel relation to one face of the body portion, as best shown in Fig. 4, to permit the fingers to be hooked over and lap one side wall of the box while the body portion 4 is disposed at the other side of the Wall. The fastener is of greater length than the depth of the box in connection with which it is to be used to adapt its ends to extend above and below the box when the parts are assembled.
In the use of my fastener the body portion 4 thereof is placed at the inner side of a side or end wall of the body portion of a box with the fingers 7 hooked over and extending down at the outer side of such wall, as shown in Fig. 1, and with the pointed end 5 forced down through the bottom of the box close to the wall. The box cover is then placed over the box body and in being forced down thereon causes the pointed head 6 of the fasteners to cut through the top portion of the cover, as shown. The projecting ends 5 and 6 of the fastener are then bent over, as shown in Fig. 2, to prevent a withdrawal of the cover from the body. Any number of fasteners desired may be used in connection with a box.
It is evident that I have provided a fastener which is simple and inexpensive in its construction and capable of being easily and quickly applied to any box of a pasteboard or similar nature and that when applied thereto serves to securely hold the bottom and cover together in closed relation. To open the box it is only necessary to straighten out the bent over ends of the fasteners at either end thereof.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement, or form of the parts, as it is capable of numerous modifications and changes without departing from the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. A fastener of the class described, comprising a bendable elongated member having opposed pointed end portions for respective- 1y piercing the top and bottom of a box, and a hooked portion near one end for engaging over a side Wall of the box.
2. A fastener of the class described, having a hooked portion for engaging over a side edge of a box, and portions projecting through the bottom and cover of the box.
3. A fastener of the class described, comprising an elongated member having longitudinally projecting bendable portions at opposite ends for piercing the bottom and top of the box, and having a laterally oll'set linger near one end projecting toward the other end for engaging over the side wallol a box.
4L. A fastener of the class described, comprising an elongated member having bendable ends adapted to perforate opposite box Walls, and having a plurality of lingers proj ecting therefrom near one end and adapted to hook over and lap an edge Wall of a box.
5. A fastener of the class described, comprising a member adapted to lap a Wall of a box and having bendable end portions for projecting through opposed portions of the box, and having a portion intermediate its ends for holding engagement With the member projecting longitudinally from the inner end of the head between the fingers,
the head and body member being bendable. In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name .to this specification.
