EDWARD J. MAYER, OF HAMMOND, INDIANA.
CARBOY HOOD.
Application led August 28, 1919.
the hood may be placed over the exposed or Y protruding neck of the carboy, where it projects from the upper wall taining the carboy, and conveniently removed'thereon and used indefinitely for the purpose.
It is the usual practice to place on a casing, containing a carboy for destructive acids, a temporary structure consisting of two pieces of boards with their upper ends secured together and their lower diverging ends nailed to the top wall of the casing on each side of the protruding neck of the enclosed carboy. These structures are usually destroyed upon receipt of the package, so that every time a casing containing an acid laden carboy is shipped. a new neck-protecting hood must be furnished.
y invention is concerned with a type of hood that may quickly be secured in place and as quickly and easily removed without requiring any extraneous attaching means.
It further contemplates a hood that may be used over and over again. thereby saving the expense of furnishing a new hood each time a carboy is shipped.
It further has to do with the provision of a safer protecting means and one so easily of application that it may be taken off and replaced each time a part of the contents is taken from the carboy.
Other, further and more particular ob' jects of my invention will become readily apparent to persons skilled in the art` from a consideration of the following description when taken in conjunction with the drawings, wherein Fig. 1 shows a fragment of the casing and an elevation of my improved device detachably connected thereto.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section taken on line 2 2 0f Fig. 1,
of the casing con-v serial no. 320,493.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
,Fig 4 shows a detaill of the structure eX- emplified in the foregoing figures, it being a part of a bayonet joint by which the hood is attached to the casing.
Fig. 5 is an elevation of a modification of the device, or another form which it may take.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged section taken on line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a section taken on line 7 7 of Fig. 6.
8 is an elevation in perspective of the removable portion of the cap-protecting device.
Fig. 9 shows the meansof joining the two members of the angularV portions of the device shown in Fig.
In all the views the same reference characters are employed to indicate similar parts.
The preferredform of the device consists of a dome-shaped hood 10 pressed out, preferably, from sheet metal and to give it strength it is corrugated. asat 11. A flange 12, to which the hood is detachabl)7 connected, is secured to the wall 13 of the carboy casing by lag screws 14. The casing wall 13 is perforated for the neck 15 of the carboy 16. The structure 12 is provided with a vertical rim 17 having on opposite sides a groove 18 which serves as amember for a bayonet joint by which the hood 10 is attached. Near the lower end of the hood are detents 19 that are adapted to fit in the grooves 18 of the flange 17 so that it may readily be seen that it is only necessary to turn the hood 10 part of a revolution until the detents 19 come to the end of the slots 18 when it may be raised out thru the slots 20. thereby removing the hood from over the neck 15 of the carboy. A closure 21, such as suitable cork, stopper, or the like, is'secured in the mouth of the neck 15 to prevent spilling of the contents.
In Figs. 5 to 9 inclusive I have shown a modified form in which the hood 10 consists of a single piece of metal, bent as at 22, and having two walls 23 and 24;, diverging from the apex, each having a base part 25. The walls have at their edges on either Side, tongues 26 and 27, that slidably engage each other, the projecting portion "2.8 oli' tongue 26 entering a slot 29 of the tongue 27 so that "the-*members 23"`ancl24 lmay be moved ltoward and "from each" other,v and whereby the neck 15 may be protected "on all sides by enclosing wallsf.y A-ibase"plate.30l
is secured to the walls by means of bolts,
or otherwise, and at each of its ends is'pro'#4 vided with a groove 31 overlain by a flange 32 within which the base portionofthe member 10 enters. When vit is desired .to
remove the hbod`10friom its,.psitionnon.A the carboy., casing. thek two members-$23" and 94 'are' pressed "towards each' other.` so that. the pbase :parts V25.," or either voffthem, slips `out of the groovetwhereupn:raisingwthe ,end of the member l thathas beenv removed ,from under the vflange 3Q, the-'device may readily be removed from its positionovertheneck 1510i the carboy,` The naturaliresiliency of the the. structure isfsuflicient 'to hold the base portions in their respectivel grooves lneither of the structures illustrated in' the drawings, .the hood may quickly removed 'from its protecting posi tion andjust as quickly andeasily yreplaced and, atter .it vhas been initiallyiprovided, it may be used from time totime to perform its. intended Afunction.
