Description

Dec. 26, 1922. 1,449,308. R. E. IVIALOY.
APPARATUSIOR APPLYING GRONIMETS.
FILED c.21.1.921.
WIT/VESSES 5 RICHARD E. lVIALOY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
APPARATUS FUR APPLYING GROMMETS.
Application ledDecember 21, 1921.y Serial No. 524,036.
lyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and lmproved Apparatus for Applying Grommets, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
IThe present invention relates to an apparatus for eifecting the application of grommets to tl e material and rrefers more particularly to the type of grommet disclosed in a (3o-pending application tiled November 21, 1921, and bearing Serial No. 516,687.
Under the practice now generally employed grommets are applied by lirst cutting away a portion of the material to form the opening for the reception of the grommet body, said opening being of substantially the same diameter as the grommet body.
An object of the present invention is to provide a device in which this initial cutting away of the material is eliminated and in which means are provided for initially puncturing the material and gradually enlarging the puncture by rolling the edge of the material defining the opening to produce a bead and at the same time rolling the grommet body over the bead to insure the proper gripping of the material thereby.
With the above recited and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specitication, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms vin, which the claims are expressed.
ln the drawinglligure 1 is a fragment-ary vertical sectional view of the apparatus illustrating the perforation of the material.
l? ig. 2 is a similar view illustrating a further step, namely, the rolling of the material defining the grommet receiving opening and the expansion and rolling of the grommet body.
Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating the clamping of the bead within the grommet.
F l is a perspective view of a modified form of the material perforating and bead forming element.
Fig. 5 is a similar view of a further modlication.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 10 and 11 designate respectively the female and male die members, the latter consisting of a block having a circular recess 12 in its upper face provided with a concentric central bearing post 18 projecting above the upper surface of the block and having a reduced central trunnion 14. The material perforating and bead forming member 15 is of a diameter substantially equal to the diameter of the bearing post 13 and is provided on its under side with a recess 16 for the reception of the trunnion 14, whereby the member 15 is detachably associatedy with the bearing post. The upper extremity of the member 15 is tapered to provide a pointed terminal 17. The female die member 10 is provided with a lcentral opening 18 and a concentric circular recess 19 in itsunder surface. The female member is further provided with an annular concentric collar 20 depending from the inner wall of the recess, said collar being provided with. an upwardly and outwardly iared outer wall 21. rllhe inner diameter' of the collar and thev size of the opening 18 are of substantially the same size whereby the member 15 and bearing post 13 will besnugly received thereby when the members 10 and 11 are advanced toward each other.
ln use and operation7 the grommet comprising a substantially hyperboloidal body A and an 'outwardly liared annular flange B is arranged over and surrounding the bearing post 13 and member 15 of the die mei ber f1.1 with the flange B resting within the recess l2. The material (l through which. the grommet is to be inserted is then placed between the separated die members 10 and l1 and punctured by the pointed terminal 17 of the member 15, said puncture being gradually enlarged by advancing the material toward its base thereby rolling the edge D of the material outwardly and advancing the same over the bodyi A of the grommet. The die member 10 is then advanced toward the die member 11 until the lower edge of the collar 2O enters the upper open end of the grommet bead A. Further continued movement of the member 10 toward the member 11 would cause `the upvso wardly and outwardly iiared outer wall of the collar to roll the upper edge of the grommet body v(,)utwardly until the same coacts with the circular recess 19.- The final step effects the simultaneous rolling` of the material D'into bead form; and the body A ofA the grommet around the bead thus formed to securely grip and maintain the gromm'et in place. l
As illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the material pertorating and bead formingmember 15 is provided with a pluralityoi' angularly disposed `faces 28 which produce a plurality' initially. produced'in the material which are gradually formed into an opening by the rolling ofthe edge oi the material upon itself to form a bead.V i
Iclaim: f
l.' An apparatus vfor effecting. the insertion and application of a one-piece grommet to the'material lto which the same is applied comprising male and female die members, means on the male'memberyover whichthe grommet is arranged and seated, said means including a pointed extremity for initially puncturing the material, said extremity being of gradually increasing ,diameters toward .the grommet seat portionffor enlarging the-puncture and rolling ythe edgeof the material defining the puncture voutward to form a bead defining the opening. for receiving the g'rommet'body,y and means on the female member adapted to engage with-in the` grommet body uponadvancement of the 'dies toward each other, said meansbeing of gradually! increasing diameters for effecting the rolling of the body of the grommet over saidbead to embrace and clamp'the same.
2. An apparatus for applying grommets y to ,effectv an initial puncturing of the material-enlarging oi they same y*by rolling the material defining the puncture outward to 'orrnpav bead and an enlarged openingkto receive the grommet body, the ieinalemember having` a' central opening, recess at its under side, andy a depending sleeve flared outwardly and upwardly on; its outer side the. gronjimet body# over the bead'whe'n thel die membersare advanced toward each` other.
-f 3.'.An7apparatus for. applying .one-piece grommets to the material'with which it isto be associated" for forming an eyelet therein comprising male and female die members,
said male member having a projecting stem over which` the grommet is arranged, the said stembeing pointed at its terminal and ofy gradually increasing diameters toward the base to afford means for initially puncturing the material, and'subsequently en- `'for spreading and turningtheupper end of larging the puncture and rolling, `the maf' terial'outwar-d to form a bead around an opening for the reception or the grommet body, thesaid female member having a central opening defined by a projection of. gradually increasing diameters, which upon movement ofv the die members toward each ,other extends over the stem fand within the grommet to roll the saine outwardly over the bead. v v z l ,l RICHARD MALOY.
