BED ATTACHMENT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, .VIOENTE BoUzA, a subject of the King of Spain, residing at Highland Park, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Bed Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a combination attachment for beds, being particularly intended for application to beds occupied by invalids or bed-ridden persons.

. The invention has for an object to provide an attachment capable of ready application to an ordinary bed and whlch provides an adjustable book-rest. or table and has also mounted thereon a series of other devices for use by the occupant of the bed.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

As here shown my improved attachment comprises a pair of posts or uprights 10 to the lower ends ofwhich is fixed a horizontal bar 11, while their upper ends have a small cabinet 12 seated thereon. This cabinet may be divided into a number of compartments in which may be placed medicine or toilet accessories and is closed by a glass door. The cabinet serves as the top horizontal member of a rigid frame comprising also the posts 10 and bottom bar 11.

Slidably engaged over the posts 10 are sleeves 13 on which are fixed the hooked elements 14 which engage over the usual horizontal bar 15 of the head frame of the bed. Adjustably supported by the posts 10 is a horizontal cross-piece having eyes 21 at its ends engaged over the posts and provided with screws 22 adapted to engage in selected ones of rows of vertically spaced holes 22' in the posts. Upon the cross-piece 20 a lamp fixture 23 is adjustably mounted.

Rigidly fixed at its opposite ends to the lower ends. of these sleeves 13 is a hollow cross-bar 25 having suitable apertures in its ends through which the posts -l0 pass freely. In this bar 25 are a pair of slidable latch-bolts 26 adapted to engage with selected ones of other rows of vertically spaced holes 27 in the posts 10. These latch bolts are urged to locking position by a coiled expansion spring 27 located between the adjacent ends of the bolts. To retract the bolts they are provided with finger pieces 28 projecting through a longitudinal slot 29 in the bar 25. Upon the sleeves 13 I fix a pair of small bookcases 30 between which I locate a box 31 divided into a number of compartments in one of which a safe or strong-box 32 is fitted.

Connected to the lower ends of the posts 10 are a pair of lazy-tongs elements 35, the two inner end links each of which are connected respectively to collars 36 slidable and revoluble on the posts 10, and to collars 37 swiveled on the posts, the corresponding outer ends being connected to collars 38 and 39 engaged, similarly to the respective collars 36 and 37, with a vertical bar 40 supported by the outer ends of the lazy-tongs. The upper end of the bar 40 is hollow and has fitted therein a rod 41 havinga laterally directed upper end on which is mounted, by means of a hinge joint indicated at 42, a mirror 43. The rod 41 may be held in ad- .justed position by a screw 41.

The lower end of the bar 40 is bifurcated to provide a pair of downwardly projecting prongs 44 which have pivotally attached to their lower ends an arm 45 projecting toward the head of the bed. Upon the end of this arm 45 is a socket 46 in which is positioned a'ball 47 in the upper side of which a stud 48 is rotatably engaged. Projecting rigidly from this stud 48 are a pair of arms 49 on the outer ends of'which a frame 50 of generally rectangular shape is fixed. This frame serves as a book-rest, a book being indicated thereon at B in Fig. 1, while it also has secured thereto a board 51 adapted to form a table top. As will be apparent, by adjusting the ball 47 in the socket 46 the frame 50 may be given different angular positioning. To lock the frame against angular displacement the ball 47 has the lower side thereof formed with the closely spaced holes 52 adapted to be individually engaged by the upturned end of a latch-arm 53 pivoted as at 54 to the arm 45, this latcharm being yieldingly held in operative position by means of aspring 55 hearing on a finger-extension 56 on the latch-arm.

The arm 45, which as above set forth is pivoted on the lower end of the vertical bar 40, is locked against swinging movement by a collar 60 slidable thereon and adapted to engage a segmental rack-bar 61 fixed to the arm concentric to its pivot, and passing between the prongs 44. A coiled expansion spring 62 surrounding the bar 40 may bear downwardly on the collar to hold it i engagement with the rack 61.

It is believed that the manner of use of my improved attachment will be readily understood from the above description. The members 30, 31 may be given suchvertical positioning as may be desired while the combined book-rest and table may be raised or lowered, moved toward and away from the head of the bed, or adjusted angularly.

As'indicated in Fig. 6 I may form the sleeves 13 with rigid downward extensions 13' on the lower ends of which are swiveled collars 36 to which one link of each of the lazy-tongs connects so that the lowering of the parts 30, 31 will automatically project the lazy-tongs to extended position.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United lows:

1. A device of the class described comprising a frame adapted to be mounted on the headof a bed, a vertical bar supported by said frame, said bar having its lower end bifurcated, an arm pivoted in the said lower end of the bar, a book-rest carried by said arm, a segmental rack fixed to said arm concentric to the pivot point of the latter and engaging between the prongs of-the bifurcated lower end of the said bar, and a collar slidable on said bar and having removable engagement with said rack to hold the said arm against swinging movement.

2. A device 'of the class described comprising a frame adapted to be mounted on the head of a bed, a vertical bar supported by said frame, said bar having its lower end bifurcated, an arm pivoted in the said lower States is as folend of the bar, a book-rest carried by said arm, a segmental rack fixed to said arm concentric to the pivot point of the latter and engaging between the prongs of the bifurcated lower end of the said bar, and a collar slidable on said bar and having removable engagement with said rack to hold the said arm against swinging movement, and a spring surrounding said bar and bearing on said collar to hold the same engaged with said rack bar.
