The object of the present invention is to provide an improved construction by means of which a more perfect balance than hitherto is obtainable with a considerable reduction in the quantity of exposed lead or other substance usually employed as a weighting medium.
According to this invention the metal plate provided with a rearwardly extending stem which is inserted within a transverse hole bored through the club head haw ing a lead or other suitable liner serving as the primary weighting medium 01": the club. Final security may be effected by means of a nut which resides within an enlargement of the transverse hole and engages the outer extremity of the said stem. This enlargement is subsequently filled with lead or other suital le weighting material and finished ofl flush with the outside of the club head in the conventional manneix In order that the invention may be clearly understood a practical example of the same will now be described by aid of the accompanying drawings in which t- Fig. 1 is an elevation of the club head looking; towards the driving taco of the same a 2 is a plan of the same;

nds through the club head from this recess 6 to a circular enlargement or poclzet f vzhich opeusout at the rear sire of the club head.
The grate (Z is integrally or otherwise 'i ormed with .cwardljr extending stem f/ iter extixmitv of which is screwed as mid for the reception of a locking nut in assemblv a lead liner is first inserted in the hole e after which the stem 5/ 01"- the plate (Z is forced throu 'h the liner until such plate resides flush wit the recess 0 after which the whole is pulled tightly into position by means of the nut i. The enlarge ment is then filled with lead as at which fillingis then finished off flush with the ou side face of the club head.
The lead liner and filling are so proportioned as to effect the required weighting of the club i k4 it will thus be seen that the exposed area of the lead filling; needs but to be small in comparison to Lie conventional filling; the additional required weight being supplied by the lead liner j. i i
The lead liner may either be separately formed and inserted. in the hole 6 as abovenienticned or the stem the metal plate may be ist positioned in the hole when the lead iner is formed by i urine; the same at the same time as the filling in the molten state around the stem and nut 27, For this purpose pouring channels Z shown dotted in thror v 7 said head and out m p rallel to s ha and having a 12 m t at ed in said head 2h said a en '11 one of said both ends a headed bolt lo I with its stem extending it ture and its head disposed r it. enlar nents, a lead sleeve surrounding said stem and fitting within and of the same length as said aperturei said sleeve serving: as the nriinar wei hting medium. for the club a nut located in said further enlargement eng lg" the end of said stem and serving to hold said bolt in position and a filling of lead in the enlargement containing the nut, said filling surrounding said nut and serving as the secondary weighting medium for the club.
2. A golf club comprising in combination a head, an aperture extending transversely through said head and substantially parallel to its base, an enlargement at both ends of said aperture, 21 headed bolt located in said head with its stein extending through said aperture and its head disposed Within one of said enlargements, a lead sleeve surrounding said stem and fitting Within and of substantially the same length as, said aperture, said sleeve serving as the primary Weighting medium for the club a nut 10- eated'in said further enlargement engaging the end of said stem and serving to hold said CHARLES WILLMOTT.
