Description

afA. BunH. Pictu re- Frames.
Parengd N0v.1s,1a13.-
WITNESSES.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFEicE.
JOHN A. BURCH, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PICTURE-FRAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,599, dated November 18, 1873 application led August 25, 1873.
i lip on the under side for greater security in binding the ends of the frame together.
Upon the facesv of these clamps or corners I cause to be embossed or cast initial letters,
VInonograms, names, trade-marks, or other dcvices, thereby materially adding to the general neatness and ornamentation of the design.
These clamps or corners I let into the ends or corners of the frame by cutting away a portion of the wood-work so as to make them fit snug, and secure them thereto by screws or other fastenings.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view of the top or face of the casting. Fig.
2 is a view of the under side of the same, showing the lip, which may or may not be used.
A is the top of the casting, upon the face of which it is intended to place the initial letters,
i monograms, names, trade-marks, or other devices, as indicated by the letters L. S. and M. S. B is the outer edge or rim of the casting. C is the lip` on the under side of the same; and a a are holes for screws or other fastenings, to secure the same to the wood-work of the frame.
The object and uses of my invention are, first, for the better protection of the frames, and giving them additional strength and durability by the application and use of these corners, thus providing for the use of light and cheap moldings in the manufacture of frames of various sizes; second, the initial letters, monograms, or other devices on the corners, are intended to denote the name or mark of the owner of the frame, (for instance, L. S. and M. S. indicating Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway,) being especially adapted as a protection against the confiscation ofthe frames or appropriating them to private uses by any 011e but the rightful owner. The frames may be so mutilated where the corners are fastened by the cutting away of the woodwork to flt them in as to prevent detaching the corners by evil-disposed persons to avoid de? tection of appropriating what is not their own third, the large' amoinitY of advertising done by business firms and corporations, especially railways, inthe use of frames so widely circulated as they generally are, appears to demand for the owner the best possible protection, which I claim is embodied in the use of my invention.
I claim as my invention- A corner-piece for picture, advertising, and analogous frames, made substantially as described, in 011e piece of cast-iron or other metal, and provided with letters or other devices in relief, as and for the purposes set forth.
