PATENT OFFICE.
s01. LnvmsoN, or SAN rmncisco, CALIFORNIA.
FIGHTING GLOVE.
Application filed January 12. 1921. Serial No. 436,750.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 8% LEVINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fighting Gloves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to boxing gloves, and particularly to relatively heavyweight boxing gloves, these boxing gloves weigh- 111;: eight or ten ounces.
The general object of this invention is to improve upon the construction and form of boxing loves, and more specifically to provide a g ove having a double grip whereby the glove is inost securely held upon the hand, and which is further provided with a padded portion which protects the knuckle of the forefinger to thereby prevent any injury to the foreknuckle of the hand while boxing.
A further object is to provide a glove of this character in which the thumb of the glove is reinforced by a reinforcing strap stitched over the seam between the thumb and the palm of the glove.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the glove looking toward the palm; I
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the glove;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the glove;
Figure 4: is a plan view of the blank from which the palm is made;
Figure 5 is a plan view of the blank for the back.
Referring to these drawings it will be seen from Figure 3 that the glove consists of the back section 10 of leather or other suitable material, and a palm section 11 which is shorter than the back section so that the back! section extends around beneath the under faces of the fingers and is stitched to the palm section, at 12. The palm section adjacent the wrist is provided with a V- shaped opening 13 formed with the usual perforations for laces 14.- The palm is also provided with ventilating openings 15, as usual. Stitched to the back section and the palm section of the glove is the thumb 16 which is formed in two parts 17 and 18 stitched together on the line 19 and stitched to the back. section 10 and also stitched'to the alm section on the-line 20, this line of stitc ing being covered by a reinforcing strap 21 which is stitched to the palm section and the section 17 respectively of the thumb. Extending transversely across the palm slightly inward of the end of the palm is a strip 22, the space between this strip and the palm section of the glove being filled with stufiing 23 so as to form a rib. This rib projects outward and also slightly inward.
The lining 24'of the back section extends from-the wrist extremity of the glove, and
is attached to the palm section on a line beyond the stitching 12, the palm section being extended inwardly beyond the seam 12 to join the lining 24 and to form a flexible transversely extending added rib 25 which defines a pocket 26 or the fingers of the hand. This rib 25 with the rib 23 constitutes a double grip for the glove which holds it very securely upon the hand.
The especial feature of the glove form-- ing the subject matter of the present invention is the provision of means for protecting the knuckle of the first or forefinger. In ordinary boxing gloves, there is little protection for this finger, as the padding of that portion of the back of the glove which extends transversely across the fingers is relatively li ht at its junction with the palm of the gi ove. I have so designed the back of the glove and the palm as to provide a padded protuberance 27. This is provided, as illustrated in Figure 5, by forming the blank constituting the outside of the back of the glove 10 with a laterally projecting portion 28 and cutting out the blank 11 to form the outside of the palm with a lateral projection 29 in advance of the thumb recess 30. When these sections are stitched together along the line 12, a relatively great amount of material in the laterally projecting portion 28 of the blank lO forms an outwardly bulging pocket, as it were, which is filled with padding and which projects toward the thumb, and when the hand is placed within the glove and closed, this padded protuberant portion, which is somewhat triangular in side elevation, fits the space between the inner edge of the thumb and the side of the glove and entirely fills this space so that the knuckle of the first finger is protected by a relatively large Ill) amount of padding at this particular point. The wrist of the glove is defined by stitching 31 extending across the back of the glove and through the lining, the space between the lining and the back of the glove being padded, as at 32. The rear ends of the palm portion of the glove at the wrist are also padded, the lining '33 being of leather at this oint.
While I have illustrated a, certain particularshape for the sections from which the glove is made and certain details of (onstruction, I do not wish to be limited to these, as these details might be varied in many respects, but I regard as particular features of the present invention the provision in a boxing glove'of the double grip formed by the parts 23 and 25, and particularly the provision of a protecting protuberant padding on the side of the glove adapted to fit in the space between the thumb and the body of the glove for the purpose of protecting the knuckle joint.
I claim: v 1. A boxing glove having a thumb ortion and apadded body port-ion with w ich said thumb portion is connected, said body having an angular protuberance integrally formed therewith 'and'adapted to extend from the side of the love inwardly toward the crotch of the t umb to protect the knuckle of the user disposed within said thumb portion. A
2. A boxing glovehaving a thumb r tion' and a. padded body portion to which the thumb-portion is connected, the body portion comprim'n a back part and a palm part, each of whic is formed from a blank having a lateral extension, which extensions when joined together form a protuberance adapted to fill t e crotch of the thumb part of the glove so as to protect the side of the knuckle of the user.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
