To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, EUGENE GRIEsHABER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, Ridgewood, in the borough of Queens, county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Swing, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in lawn swings, an object of the invention being to provide a motor driven swlng which will do away with the manual exertion ordinarily necessary to operate a lawn swing.
A further object is to provide a swing of this character, which may be manufactured either as a toy, or in full size for outdoor use, and a swing which will be simple and practical in construction, neat and attractive in appearance, strong and serviceable in use, unlikely'to get out of order, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section through my improved swing on the line 11 of Figure 2;
Figure 2 is another view in longitudinal section taken at right angles to Figure 1 and on the line 22 thereof; and
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary detail sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings, I have used the reference numeral 1, 1 to designate a pair of inverted V shaped frames forming the side frames for the swing and adapted to rest upon the ground. Longitudinal braces 2 and transverse braces 3 connect the feet of the frames 1, lending strength to the swing construction. A cross piece 4: connecting the apices of the V shaped frames serves to support the intermediate portion of a canvas sun shade 5. The edges of this canvas sun shade are secured to the intermediate portions of U shaped yokes 6 pivoted to opposite sides of the frames 1 adjacent their upper ends.
A pair of hangers 7 depending from the cross piece 4 carry a rod 8 from which a pair of arms or pendulums 9 pivotally depend. The arms 9 carry at their lower ends any convenient type of seat 10 for the reception of a person, or a doll in case the device is a toy.
The invention in this case resides principally in the provision of a spring motor, designated in its entirety by the reference numeral 11, for oscillating the seat. The motor is accommodated between a pair of plates 12, one of which is secured to the outer face of one of the frames 1 and the other of which is spaced from the first plate by suitable spacing devices 13. The spring motor may be of any conventional construction. I prefer to use a main drive shaft 14 provided with a suitable crank handle 15 for winding the spring 16 of the motor. The drive shaft may be connected through any number of suitable countershafts 17 and speed increasing gears 18 to adriven shaft 20. The inner end of this shaft projects inwardly through the plate 12 which is secured to the frame 1, and carries a crank arm 19 at the end of which, an inwardly presented pin 21 is fixed.
An outwardly extending stud 22 carried by the adjacent pendulum or arm 9 provides mounting for a wire 23, said wire including a spring loop 24: to cushion the movement of the swing and including a depending elongated loop portion 25, accommodating the pin 21 of the crank arm 19.
When the device is in operation, the elongated loop 25 by virtue of the weight of the swing 1O acts as an escapement forthe spring motor and the pin 21 by virtue of the intermittent rotation of the shaft 20 imparts an oscillating movement to the elongated loop 25 and through the medium of this loop to the pendulums 9 which carry the swing.
