CORNER STAY FOR BOXES.

Application filed July 12, 1921.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l. EDWARD G. HIoG N- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corner Stays for Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to corner stays or locks for folding card board boxes, such as the ordinary suit boxes or the like, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a novel corner stay or lock, which is so constructed that the walls of the box can be readily and easily interlocked and held firmly in place against accidental displacement.

A further object of the invention is to rovide a novel device for bracing the locklng tongues or wings, said bracing device also forming an efi'icient means for holding the tongues or wings in their locked position, whereby accidental displacement thereof is prevented.

A further object of the invention is to rovide an improved corner stay for card board boxes and the like, of the above character, which will be durable and efiicient in use and one that can be easily manufactured and at a minimum cost. 1

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which drawings:

Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank of one portion of a box.

Figure 2 is a perspective view of the blank after the same is folded.

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A indicates a blank, which is shaped to conform to the desired configuration of the box, and as shown the blank is of substantially rectangular configuration, and is scored longitudinally adjacent to its longitudinal ed es as at 5 and 6, to provide the longitudinal y extending side walls 7 and 8. The blank is also scored transversely as at 9 and 10 to provide the end walls 11 and 12. The scored portions 5, 6, 9 and 10 also define the bottom or top wall 13 of the box as the case may be.

The longitudinal side walls 7 and 8 terminate at the transverse scored lines 9 and 10, while the end walls 11 and 12 are extended outwardly of the longitudinal scored lines 5 and 6 to form the interlocking wings 14. These wings 14 are of a novel configuration and include the reduced body portion 15 having parallel marginal edges and an angularly extending insertion tongue 16. At the point of connection of the insertion tongue 16 with the body portion 15 of the wings 14, the wings are provided with oppositely disposed inwardly extending V- shaped notched portions 17 and 18. The notched portion 17 defines a hook 19, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described. The ti-shaped notch portion 18 defines a penetrating point 20, the purpose of which will also be hereinafter more fully described.

The end walls 7 and 8 are provided adjacent to their corners with substantially angular shaped locking slots 21, the apex portions of which extend toward the outer corners of these walls.

Intermediate the transverse edges of the side walls 7 and 8 and the angular shaped locking slots 21, the longitudinal side walls 7 and 8 are provided with a pair of spaced parallel slots 22, whichdefine bracing strips 23. These slots 22 extend at an angle to the transverse edges of the side walls 7 and 8, which tends to facilitate the insertion of the wings 14: therein. The wings 1e are adapted to be bent at right angles to the end walls 11 and 12, and are divided therefrom by scored lines 25 as is readily apparent by referring to Figure 1 of the drawing.

When it is desired to interlock the end walls 11 and 12 of the side walls 7 and 8, the same are bent angularly on their scored lines 5, 6, 9 and 10, and the inserting tongues 16 are inserted through the slots 22, and then into the angular locking slot 21. The angular related insertion tongues 16 readily slide into the slots 22, and the inserting points 20 defined by the notches 18 facilitates this insertion. Also the angular position of the slots 22 facilitates the insertion of the inserting tongues therethrough. It is to be also noted that one portion of the angular related locking slots 21 extends in parallel relation to the slots 22. The tongues 16 are inserted into the slots 22 so as to position the locking strips 23 on the exterior of the body, and the tongues 16 are inserted in the locking slots 21, the hooks 19 thereof will engage on the inner surface of the side walls of the box and prevent the accidental displacement of the inserting ton ues therefrom. The strips 23 form an efliclent means for holding the insertion ton es 16 in position in the locking slots 21.

rom the foregoing, it can be seen that an exceedingly simple corner stay for cardboard boxes has been provided, which will effectively hold the side walls. of the box in interlocked sition, and facilitating the interlocking o the walls with one another.

Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention; but,

I claim:

1. In a box, a pair of walls, an outwardly extending locking wing formed on one of the walls, the other wall having an angular locking slot formed therein and a pair of parallel arranged slots disposed intermediate the transverseedge of the wall and the locking slot, these slots being arranged to receive the locking wing.

2. In a box, a pair of walls, one of the walls havingan angular locking slot formed therein and a pair of spaced parallel guide slots disposed between the transverse edge of the wall and the locking slot, the parallel slots defining a bracing strip, and a looking wing formed on the transverse edge of the other wall including a body portion having parallel marginal edges, and a laterally extending inserting tongue, and a hook formed on the inserting tongue arranged to engage one of the walls of the locking slot.

3. In a box, a pair of walls, one of the walls having an angular locking slot formed therein and a pair of spaced parallel slots disposed between the transverse edge of the wall and the locking slot, one portion of the locking slot being disposed in parallel relation to the pair of spaced parallel guide slots, and its other portion disposed at substantial right angles thereto, the parallel I slots defining a bracing strip, a locking Wing EDWARD G.
