HAMMOCK.
Application filed January 26, 1921, Serial No. 440,092. Renewed January 18, 1923. Serial No. 530,998.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY E. Bonnooci-rs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in' Hammocks,
of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to infants hammocks and more particularly to a folding hammock, that while having other and more general features of usefulness, is well adapted and designed for use in automobiles. A principal object of the invention is to'provide a foldinghammock of this type, that is of simple and substantial construction, and also adapted to serve as an auxiliary seat on the floor of the car, when not required for use as a hammock. The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description, and
the distinctive features of novelty will be.
pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an infants hammock embodying the invention opened and ready for use, a portion of the same being broken away;
Fig. 2 is side elevation thereof showing the hammock folded;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an enclosing case adapted to receive the hammock and to be used therewith when the device is used as a seat; and
Fig. 4c is a perspective view of the casing from a different angle.
10 indicates a metallic frame composed of two U-bars 10 10, the ends of which are brought into proximity to each other and are pivoted as indicated at 11, 12 to U-shaped brackets 13 which permit a oneway folding of these members with respect to each other, and presenting its top as an abutment preventing the members from swinging downward out of alignment from the position shown in Figure 1. The lower corners of these members are relieved or rounded as indicated at 14 so as to permit them to fold together as indicated in Fig.-
2. The frame thus constituted may be supthe frame. 20 indicates a mattress adapted.
to be fitted in the hammock body. 21 indicates a casing or cover adapted toreceive the hammock when folded as indicated in Fig. 2, it being understood. that the mattress 20 will bedoubled on itself and enclosed within the folded hammock body as the hammock is inserted in the case 21. 22 indicates a top closure or flap adapted to be secured to close the case and fastened by suitable eyelets 23 or the like. This top flap may be provided with a suitable handle 24. At one side of the case 21 I preferably provide a pocket 25adapted to receive ar- Y Q ticles of apparel or other requisites for the careof the child. The case 21 may be made of stout canvas or like material, and. with the hammock and its mattress folded and placed therein, it is adapted to serve as a low seat when placed on the floor of the machine. I am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in allrespects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claim rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention. 7 H 7 Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination with an infants hammock composed of a metallicframefoldable midway of its length and formed of two U-shaped bars pivoted for swinging with respect to each other and a flexible Q V 1,4e3,5oe
hammock body ciepending therefrom with a mattress fitted therein, of a flexible case ture in presence of two witnesses. conforming in length to the length of said frame when folded and adapted to receive HARRY E. BURROUGHS said hammock body and frame with the Witnesses: mattress therein to constitute therewith a HENRY C. THoMso Nf seat as set forth.
LILLIAN K. HALEY.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signe-
