Application filed 0ctober25,'1922. Serial No. 596,877.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, JACK TAYLOR BEN- NETT, asubject of the King o'f' Great Britain and Ireland, residing at .23 Queenborough Gardens, Glasgow, W., Scotland,--have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Use with Beds, for which Lhave filed an application in Eng land October 12,1921, No. 27,039, and of which the following is. a specification.
This invention relates to a device o'rappliance for use in connection with beds, for facilitating the making thereof andto ensure greatercomfort, and is designed to enable one of the edges preferablylthe lower edge, of asheet, blanket and/or other article of bed clothing to be simply and efficiently gripped, without injury thereto, thus enabling the bed to be very quickly and evenly made, after the device has once been placed in position. At the same time, when it is desired to change the bed clothes,'this can be done very rapidly and expeditiously.
According to the general principle of my invention, I provide a channelled fitting, of
wood or other suitable material adapted, in the preferred caseito extend transversely across the-lower edge of the sheet or other article of bed, clothing, or a portion of .the same, in proximity to such edge. I further provide a slat or the like, adapted to come view of a pre- .2, and illustrate the method of using the device. 7 7
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are diagrammaticend elevations showing the various stages of operation. V
Fig. 8 shows in elevationand Fig. 9 in plan a portion of a device made according to the invention incorporating a modification.
The device consists generally of two meIn-' bers, a slat 10 and a channelled fitting, which l tter c mpri e a a e l1, Walls 12 and 13 and an overhang or flange 14, at the top of the wall 13.
The slat 10 is preferably somewhat bevelled as shown and is of greater width than the distance between the edge of the flange 14:, and the inner face of the wall 12, but is of such width that when one of its edges is pushed under the flange 14, the slot reaches across but does not entirely fill the bottom of the channel. v
In use, the channelled member is placed upon the under mattress 15., at the foot of the bed, with the wall 13, towards the head therccf, see Fig. 2; It may simplyrest on the mattress or it may be retained in position in any suitable manner, for instance as shown it may. have anadjustable strap 16, fastened to each end thereof, the straps carrying hooked plates 17, adapted to be engaged with the angle iron side 18 of the bed frame. Or in some cases, especially when resting on a spring mattress it may be attached to the frame thereof, by means of suitable screws, passing through recessed or countersunk apertures, such as shown at 19, (Figs. 8 and 9).
The sheets, blankets and/ or other articles of bed clothing 20 which are to be gripped, are. placed with their edges 21, a few inches from the device and turned towards the top of the bed, so that the material extends over the channelled member and then over the lower end of the bed, see Fig. 3.
The slat 10 is next takenand inserted in an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 5, so that one of its edges pushes the bed clothes 20 beneath the overhanging flange 14:, until the other edge of the slat can be fitted into the channel, see Figs. 6, 7 and 4.
After this, the hair or other mattress is turned back into position, so that its lower end-comes over the device and the bed clothes are then turned up, see Fig. 7, and the bed made in the ordinary way.
lVhen the bed clothes 20 are pulled say in the direction of the arrow 23, see Fig. 7, the slat 10 is pulled upwardly slightly and grips the bed clothes between itself and the underside of the flange 14, preventing movement of the clothes.
When the bed has been occupied, it is only necessary to turn the clothes 20 over the'bottom of the bed for airing, after which the bed can be again made in a few moments, as the lower edge of the clothes, being held in the proper position no skill or trouble is necessary'in adjusting them.
It is simply necessary to lay them over the bed and to tuck in the sides.
When however, it is desired to change the bed clothes, this can be done very quickly.
Thelower end of the mattress is raised, and the edge of the sheetor the like is lifted in the"directionof the arrow- 24, see Fig. 7,
V whichewithdr-awsr automatically the slat from thechannel, thus releasing the clothes inestic purposes, it will beof great use in hotels, schools, institutions or on board ship, l where a large number of beds have to be made. By its iise it will be possible to make these in a more eflicient manner andexpeditiously than is at present the case.
7 In addition, there is no liability of the lower ends of the bed clothes becoming displaced, during the night which often happens withrestless sleepers.
It will be understood that the particular method 0t constructing the device herein described is given merely by way of example, and that the constructionniay be 1 varied considerably without departing from the principles of my invention.
: In some cases thedevice be fitted along the side of the bedstead, instead of at the lower end.
- will be obviousthat in place of forming aseparate device, adapted to be attached toorplaced upon the bedstead, the chan nelled portion or" the said device may constitute a portion of the bedsteadiitselt, or may portion of the I be attached to or form a spring or other' nattress.
WhatiI'claim. as my invention and de- 7 sire to secure b Letters Patent of the United States of ner-ica is i I Y 1'. Means for facilitating the making of beds; comprising a; channelled ne 'nberadapted to 'receivethebedclothestovvards} i 7 one edge thereof, having a. base andtwo walls, one ot' the latter being furnished with a'flan'ge overhanginglthechannel, re-
ducing the width of the opening at the top thereof, a slat adapted to enter the charinel, the said slat being of greater, Width thanthe reduced opening, but of less width than the-nornialwidth of the'channe'l, and means arranged to, cooperate with said overhanging flange, to prevent casual removal of the'slat; r f 2.
