Description

Patented @et. 23,
QNETED Lanai CLARENCE CORNELIUS, 0F SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
SHINGLIIIG SEAT OR BRACKET.
Application filed October 26, 1921. Serial No. 510,464.
To all whom it may concern.
lie it known that CLARENCE Conivunins, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, has invented new and useful improvements in Shingling Seats or Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and convenient and at the same time safe construction of bracket or seat for use on pitched roofs as a support for the operator or for scaffolding planks or boards in shingling or applying roofing material; and with tnis object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein igure 1 is a side view of a device embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a front view of the same.
Figure 3 is plan view of the blank from Which'the base is constructed.
The apparatus embodies essentially a base 10 consisting of a plate having upturned side flanges 11 and terminal spurs 12, a platform 13 pivotally mounted as at 14C upon the base between the flanges thereof at their upper enls, a brace 15 hingedly connected as at 16 with the front or outer edges of the platform, a locking means 17 for securing the lower edge of the brace in adjusted relation with the base to support the platform in the desired position and enable the operator to dispose the same horizontally regardless of the angle at which the roof is pitched.
The base is preferably constructed of a single plate or blank of material with the spurs 12 at the upper and lower ends thereof disposed in downwardly directed relation with the plane of the plate so as to effectively engage the framing of the roof structure which is indicated in section in Figure 1 at 18, and the side flanges of the base are provided with series of openings 19 for selective engagement by bolts 20 mounted in rolled guides 21 at the lower edge of the brace 15 and yieldingly held extended, in
position for engagement with said openings 19 by a V-shaped spring 22. The inner ends of the bolts may be provided with outstanding pins 23 forming handles or grips by which the bolts may be manipulated or ithdrawn from engagement with the openings in the base flanges when an adjustment of the platform is to be made.
When not in use the platform and brace may be folded into substantially parallel relation with the base so as to be stored or transported with facility and under c0nditions occupying the minimum space, and when set up the adjustment of the brace by means of the locking devices may be such as to support the platform in a substantially horizontal posit-ion regardless of the angle of inclination of the base which rests firmly upon the surface of the roof frame and is held from slipping or sliding thereon by means of the anchoring spurs 12.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is A roofing bracket having a base adapted to rest upon and occupy a. position in parallelisin wit-h a pitched roof and provided with anchoring spurs for securing the same against sliding movement, a platform pivotally mounted upon the base adjacent to its upper end, and a brace hingedly connected with the outer or free edge of the platform and provided at its lower end with means for engaging the base to maintain the platform in an adjusted position, the base being provided with upstanding side flanges pr0- vided with series of openings and the lower edge of. the brace being provided with rolls forming guides for selective registration with said openings, and the locking means consisting of bolts slidingly fitted in said guides and provided at their inner end with outstanding pins forming grips, and a V- shaped spring secured at its apex to the brace and having its terminals connected with the pins for yieldingly maintaining the same in position for engagement with the openings in the flanges of the base.
In testimony whereof he aflixes his signature.
CLARENCE CORNELIUS.
