grater DAVID E. HELLER, 01F WILKES-BARBIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
UNION GARMENT.
Application filed November 29, 1922. Serial No. @3364.
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that 1, DAVID E. HELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vilkes-Barre, in the county-of Luzerne and 5 State of Penris lvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Union Garments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relatestounion garments or garments in which the upper or body portion and the nether portion are permanently connected together. It more particularly relates to an outer work suit in the nature of overalls in which the blouse and trousers are permanently connected.
The object of the invention is to enable a union garment of the class described, to be put on and taken off easily and quickly and securely fastened on.
. The invention consists in a blouse and trousers permanently connected together at the back and sides but divided from crotch to collar and also transversely across the front at the junction of the trousers and blouse, said cross division being adapted to be opened or closed instantly by opening and closing a separable fastener.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 illustrates the garment having the vertical and transverse openings closed, and
Figure 2 illustrates the garment having the transverse division open and the flaps of the blouse turned aside.
In the drawings, A indicates the nether portion of the garment or trousers and B the body portion or blouse. G is a fly covering a slit or opening between the crotch and the waist-band of the trousers whereby the trousers portion may be enlarged in the waist-band to enable them readily to be put on. D is the fly or overlapping edge at one side of the vertical opening of the blouse B which is adapted to be buttoned over or otherwise connected to the opposite edge of the blouse in order to enable the blouse to be opened in putting the garment on or taking it off. E is the lower edge or waist-band at the front of the blouse which is separated from the trousers from the point F to the corner Gr at the junction of the vertical edges of the blouse with the lower edge of the waist-band portion. The part E overlaps the waistband of the trousers and concea-ls the fastenings beneath it. Stitched into the waist-band of the trousers and to the underside of the part E of the blouse, respectively, are the co-mating parts of continuous, separable fasteners which may be substantially of the t pe shown'in Patent No. 1,219,881, dated arch 20, 1917. The separate interengaging members H and H of said fasteners are secured respectively to tapes or webbings I and 1' one being stitched to the trousers and one to the blouse at opposite sides of the vertical center of the garment. These fasteners are opened and closed by moving the slides K, to right or left, by means of rings or handles K in the known manner, causing the multiple parts to separate or interlock.
In applying the garment to the person the blouse will be opened down the front, the trousers portion unbuttoned and the slide members K moved as far as possible from the center line. The garment is now wide open and the trousers may be readily pulled over the legs, the arms inserted in the sleeves, and then by seizing the ring members K of the slides, one with each hand and moving them toward the center, the front of the blouse may be quickly connected to the trousers, the space between the trousers and blouse be thus closed and the fastenings concealed by the over-lapping member E on the blouse. The blouse and trousers may then be buttoned, or the buttons may be secured first, if desired. In removing the garment, the operation will of course be reversed.
By the construction described, front open in union overalls can be put on and taken ofi with speed and ease. The continuous separable fasteners extending across the front secure the blouse and trousers at the front substantially as if sewed together. The blouse part cannot be torn from the waist-band of the trousers by catching on a bench when the workman stoops nor by heavy objects, which the workman may be handling, catching under the edge of the blouse as frequently occurs when buttons or individual, one point fastenings are used.
What ll claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A union garment comprising blouse and trousers having an opening extending from the crotch to the collar, means for releasably closing said opening, and an opening extending from the side to the center of the gar- 5 ment and separating the front of the blouse from the trousers; and continuous separable fasteners positioned at either side of the cenaeaaeee ter of the garment for closing said transverse openin and securing the blouse to the trousers, sai continuous separable fasteners being concealed, when fastened, beneath the lower edge of the blouse.
Intestnnony whereof ll afix my si ature.
DAVID E, HEL ER.
