Description

Jan. 8, 1924. 1,479,903
K. ERLAND COMBINATION HAMMOCK AND BAG Filed Oct. 29. 1921 INVENTOR flnua Er/ana/ BY Q7 ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 8, 1924.
UNITED STATES KNUD ERLAND, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
COMBINATION HAMMOCK- AND BAG.
Application filed October 29, 1921. Serial No. 511,490.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, KNUD ERLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, county of King, and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Combination Hammock and Bag; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention is a device which may be used as either a'hamrnock or a bag.
The object of the invention is to construct a hammock which may also be used for a bag in which the bed clothes or any other desired objects may be packed and easily carried.
With these ends in view, the invention embodies a rectangular piece of material with eyelets in its sides and ends. The eyelets in the ends having cords in them with rings in their outer ends similar to the ends of a hammock and a blanket on top of the hammock with eyelets in its sides to match the eyelets in the sides of the piece of material and thru which the blanket is tied to the piece of material. There is also a handle on each end of the piece of material and one in the center on the under side.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device used as a hammock.
Figure 2 is a view'of the under side of the device.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the device used as a bag.
Figure 4 is an end elevation of the device used as a bag with the blanket removed.
' Figure 5 is a sectional plan showing the blanket attached to the top of the material.
Figure 6 is a cross section on line 6-6 of Figure 2.
In the drawings I have shown my device as it would appear when used as a hammock in Figures 1 and 2 and as used as a bag in Figures 3 and 4. The rectangular piece of material 1 has its sides bent around to form the hems 2 and its ends bent around to form the hems 3. In the hems 2' are the eyelets 4 and in the hems 3 are the eyelets 5 in which are the cords 6 and to the hems 3 are also the handles 7 which are held by the pins 8. The ends of the cords 6 are fastened to the rings 9 by which the device may be fastened to posts, sides of an automobile, or any desired ob ects when used as a hammock. On the under side of the device and in .its center another handle 10 is fastened by which a'sec-' ondparty may assist in carrying the device when it is used as a bag. Inside of the hems .2 and 3 may be placed a cord 11 for reinforcing. them.
On top of the device may be placed a blanket 12 which has a strip of tape 13 sewed to one edge and another strip of-tapc 14 sewed to it at a distance from the edge equal to the width of the device. In each of the strips of tape 13 and 14 are eyelets 15 thru which the blanket may be attached to the hems 2 by placing the cords thru these eyelets and the eyelets 4.
It will be understood that the device may be used in either form with or without the blanket or with the use of more than one blanket. The piece of material 12 that I have referred to as a blanket may be made of any material suitable for a covering.
It will be understood that other changes in the construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. One of such changes may be in the use of hooks, buttons, or clasps similar to those used on curtains of automobiles instead of the eyelets in the hems 2 and another may be in the use of straps around the bag instead of or in addition to the handles, or in the use of more or less handles than shown.
And still another change may be in the use of tapes sewed to the edge of the material 1 instead of using the hems 2 and 3.
The construction will be readily understood from the foregoing description. To use the device as a hammock it is opened up as shown in Figure 2 and the rings 9 in the ends of the ropes 6 fastened to any desired object for holding it in the position shown in Figure l. The blanket being placed inside is folded as shown in Figure 6 and when in use the free end may be wrapped around a person as the section between the two pieces of tape will be held in place so as to form the bottom of a bed.
When it is desired to use it as a bag it is folded on its center line and the ropes 6, the rings 9, and the blanket 12 are placed inside. Cords are then laced thru the eyelets 4 so as to hold the tapes 2 together, thus closing up the ends. Or it may be folded with the blanket, n P a y Putting the cords thru the eyelets 4 and 15. Any additional object may then be placed inside of the bag and it may be carried by the handles 7 and 10.
The material 1 used in the body may be of any desired texture to insure a comfortable bed for sleeping While at the same time it should'be suitable to render reasonable Wear.
Having thus fully described the invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the class described compris ing a flexible piece of material in the shape of a hammock, hems on the sides of the material, other hems on the ends of the material, cords inside of the hems, eyelets in the hems, cords in the eyelets of the end hems, rings in the outer ends of the cords at the ends of the material, handles on the material and a blanket With tapes in Which are eyelets.
2. A combination hammock and bag of the 3. A combination hammock and bag of i the class described comprising a flexible piece of material, means for fastening the ends of material together When it is bent in the middle, means for fastening cords to the ends of the material, means for fastening the ends of the cords to any stationary object, handles on the ends of the material, a handle in the center of the material, and a blanket on top of the material, With means for fastening it to the edges of the material.
I KNUD ERLAND.
