Be it known that I, AMos F. CHASE, of

Lynn, in the county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shirts, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a shirt provided with a mat, but with the bosom removed. Fig. 2 represents the mat detached. Fig. 3 represents a shirt with the mat removed, showing the arrangement of the retaining-cords. Fig. 4 represents the bosom detached. Fig. 5 represents a shirt with thema-t removed and the bosom in position.

My invention relates to that class of shirts designed for use with false or changeable bosoms; and consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, the object being to provide a neater and more serviceable garment of this character than is now in common use.

In Fig. l, A represents the body of the shirt, and B the bosom-mat. The mat consists of a piece of muslin or linen corresponding in texture with the body of the shirt, and formed as shown in Fig. 2, the bottom and side edges of the same being stitched neatly and securely to the body of the shirt, and the upper ends to the yoke and collar-band, as shown in Fig. l. The inner edge is left loose or full, and forms an oval opening, through which the bosom is inserted. In Fig. 4, F is the bosom, which is formed of two thicknesses or pieces of linen, laid in plaits in the ordinary manner; but, in addition to the usual vertical or longitudinal rows of stitching, there is an oval line of stitching, represented by the dotted line L L L, conforming with the oval opening in the mat B. Outside of this line, except at the top, the front and rear thicknesses orsections of the bosom are independent of each other, or not stitched together at the outer edges, as shown at Gr G. The outer section is provided with two narrow wings or anges, H H, attached to the said edges, and projecting inwardly or toward the center of the bosom. Attached to the under side of the mat B, and

near the outer side edges of the same, are two elastic cords, D D, Fig. 3. The object of these is to keep the bosom in place, 'or to prevent it from working out of position while being worn 5 and to this end they are sprung-over or carried behind the wings H H when the bosom is in position under the mat, as shown in Fig. 5. The bosom may also be retained in position by the buttons E E, which are attached to the body of the shirt, and to which the edges of the bosom are buttoned by the buttonholcs K.

From the foregoing description the nature and operation of my invention will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters.

The shirt A is complete in itself, and may be worn as a night-shirt, or as an ordinary dayshirt.

When it is desired to use the bosom F, all that is necessary is to insert it under the mat B, buttoning it to the collar-stud N by the buttonhole M, and securing the edges by the retaining-cords D D and flanges H H, as described.

When the bosom is made with a double edge, as shown in Fig. 4, the outer front edge is worn outside of the mat B, so that when pressure from the other garments is brought to bear upon the bosom the mat will be grasped between the two edges or sections, and the bosom thus retained in place.

The object of the mat is to prevent the vest or other garments from catching against the edge of the bosom and displacing or wrinkling it, which-will occur where the mat is not used.'

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In combination with a shirt, the bosommat B, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In combination with the mat B, the cords D D, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.

3. A false or changeable bosom having' the double edges G G, substantially as and forthe purpose described.

4. A false or changeable bosom provided with the flanges or Wings H H, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
