Application filed November m, 1923. Serial No 675,?63.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Anruonzo Gnan'oou JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cardenas, in the county of Wake and State of North Carolina, have invented a new, original, and useful Bathing Cap with Goggles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part thereof.
The objects of the invention are to pro vide a water proof diving cap, having ear and nose covering and transparent eye covering portions for permitting the diver to see objects while underneath the surface of the water, and at the same time keep the water out of his ears, nose and eyes.
Figures 1 and 2 are front and side views of the cap when in use. Figures 3 and 4 are side and front views of the cap when folded.
Figure 5 is'an actual size drawing of the goggle set in the cap. Figure 6 is a cross section of Figure 5, draw-n double size to show exact construction.
The numerals referring to the different '25 parts are respectively: 1, rubber skull-cap;
2 glass of goggle; 3, metal frame which holds glass; 4, rubber band acting as cushioning for number 1; 5, rubber band acting as a clamp to hold number 1 in place on number 3; 6, reinforcement band to make the skullcag fit tight at the bottom.
he lower edge of the bathing cap is of such circumference and so disposed relatively to the transparent eye covering por- J tions that the edge passes around or encircles the face between the nose and mouth, or mother Words, over the upper lip of the wearer. The cap tapers toward this edge, or in other words, this edge is somewhat con- 40 tracted relatively to the part above, thereby forming a water seal, i. e.,'it prevents the passage of water into the cap. It will be apparent that this location of the water seal portion, while shielding the eyes, ears and nose from water, takes advantage of a contour of the face strikingly free of concavities which would be likely to permit the entrance of water, while at the same time allowing the wearer to breath through the mouth or talk at any time that his head is above water without maneuvering the cap. Also by the particular location of the water sealing edge it is necessary to make such edge a normal length of but little less than the largest horizontal circumference of the face whereby but little stretching is required in the placing or removing of the cap.
I am aware that prior to my invention goggles have been used on professional diving suits, gas masks, etc, and that bathing ups are now on the market. I therefore do not claim such an invention broadly; but
I claim:
2. A waterproof bathin cap comprising nose and ear covering and transparent eye covering portions, a face encircling water sad part for preventing entrance of water into said portions,'said water seal part including an upper lip engaging portion.
3. A waterproof bathing cap comprising nose and ear covering and transparent eye covering portions, said cap tapering towards its lower edge and terminating at said edge in a face encircling water seal portion, said water seal portion including an upper lip engaging part.
ing nose and ear covering and transparent eye covering portions, said cap terminating in an elastic reinforced lower contracted edge, said edge inciudiug an upper lip cngaging portion and forming a water seal to prevent the entrance 01' water into said portions.
