STOVEPIPE-LOCKING. DEVICE.,
` @aplicasion filed September 12, 192,2.' Serial No. 587,755..
T 0 all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEFFERSON D. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hendersonville, in the county of Henderson and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Stovepipe-Locking Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in stove pipe locking devices.
An object oit' my invention is to provide a stove pipe locking device that is so constructed that no rivets are used.
A. further object of my 'invention is to provide a stove pipe locking device that is intended to take the place of riveting joints and that is so constructed that the sections may easily be taken apart for storage without any damage to the pipe and stove.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a stove-pipe locking device whereby it is impossible for the sections to slip loose or fall apart when in use.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a stovepipe lockingdevice that .is strong, durable, simple and inexpensive in construction and that is well adapted to the use for which it is designed.
In the drawings, wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure l is van elevation of the apparatus embodying my invention, and
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section taken through the ksame.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a section or length of pipe. In Fig. 2 of the drawings it will clearly be seen that the section 5 is provided near one end with a raised portion 6, which may be called a substantially V-shaped flange. The raised portion 6 is provided with a straight surface 7 which is approximately at right angles with the length of pipe 5 and a beveled face 8 which terminates in the short sleeve 9.
The numeral 10 likewise designates a section of pipe which is provided with the resilient tongues 11 at one end. The sleeve 9 is adapted to be inserted in the end of the pipe 5, and the resilient tongues 1l are adapted to be bent down over the beveled face 8 as is clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the ends of said tongues being bent down over the straight Jface 7 thus forming a permanent locking means. rlhe tongues ll are vpreferably pointed as is clearly shown in Fig. 1 oit' the drawings. By reason oi. the sleeve 9 extending a slight distance into the pipe section 10, the joint will not be free to leak.
In use, each section of pipe should be provided with a joint, that is one end should be provided with the raised portion 6, and the opposite end should be provided with the tongues 11. The end which has thel raised portion 6 as is illustrated on the end of pipe 5 in Fig. 2 of the drawings, should be inserted in the end of the pipe section l() which is provided with the tongues 11. The pipe 5 should be inserted as far as possible in the pipe 10 and the tongues 1l should be bent down to contact with the beveled face 8 and then bent over the end thereof so as to abut against the flat surface 7. It will thus be seen that a sure locking means is devised that may be easily disconnected when it is desired, that will not ordinarily come apart. This device is eX tremely eflicient in use, in view of the fact that there are no bolts or rivets to become rusted thereby causing trouble when it is desired to disconnect the sections of pipe.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred embodiment of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope orP the subjoined claims. f
I-Iaving thus fully described my invention what I claim is l. A pipe coupling comprising a pair of pipe sections, one section having an annular bead struck out therefrom defining an abrupt shoulder disposed at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the sections and an inclined guide surface leading to the shoulder, and the other section having a plurality of right angularly disposed tongues for engagement with the abrupt shoulder of the bead.
2. A pipe for couplings comprising a pair of pipe sections, one section having an annular bead struck out therefrom adjacent to one end thereoil dening an abrupt shoulder disposed at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the sections and an inclined guide surface leading to the shoulder from the mentioned end of the section and the flange engaging the inclined guide surface 10 other pipe section receiving the end of the of the bead;
lirst mentioned section having the bead, In testimony whereof I aix my signature a flared lange formed on the end of the last in presence of two Witnesses.
mentioned section receiving the mentioned end of the first mentioned section, and a JEFFERSON D KING' Vplurality of right angularly disposed 'Witnessesz tongues formed on the flange for engaging FRANK A. EWBANK, the abrupt shoulder of the bead, the flared H. H. EWBANK.
