To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE E. REED, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and resident of Houston, Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Deep- Well-Drilling Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in the features and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The drill head comprises;I a lower main part 1 and an upper screw threaded taf pered shank 2 adapted to it, for instance,
into a correspondingly threaded socket of a reamer block between the said head and the drill stem.
The main part of the head is recessed at 3 to receive the' hanger 4 upon which the cutters are journalled.
The head is also provided with lateral openings at 5. The cutters 6 protrude from thel head through these openings to do the cutting.
As shown the shape of the main part 1 of the head provides jaws 1 1" between which .the cutters and their holding or carrying hanger member 4 are' disposed. These jaws house the inner sides or edges of the cutters while the diametrically opposite sides or edges of said cutters, as before stated, protrude from the `hea'.d. The cutters are offset in relation to each other and in relation to that diameter of the head which is parallel to the cutter axes and the are mounted on'. cylindrical journal stu s 7 I integral with the hanger or lsnpport 4. The stud extensions 8, lit in notches 9 in, the lower edges of the jaws 1 1 and the heads 8a of these stud exten'- sions lit in recesses 9a o r enlargements of the notches. The notches are open downwardly and in order to insert the hanger with the cutters into place it is only necessary that it be positioned so that .its stud extensions 8 will register with the notches and then the hanger is slipped into the head. The stud extensions enter the notches and the heads of the stud extensions lie countersunk in the recesses of the head and are not subject to the wear that they otherwise would be subjected to, if they extended out beyond the outer surface 0f the head.
The removable han er forthe cutters has a shank 10 of cylin rical form which lits in a corresponding bore of the head. The upper end of the shank isreduced at 11, and a nut 12 on this threaded part bearing on top of the shank of the head draws lthe shank up into place with its shoulder 13 bearing on a corresponding shoulder of the head. The lower plate portion of the hanger has inclined edges 14 which come opposite corresponding inclined surfaces at the top yof the recess in the head. When the hanger is in place it is held rigidly against movement and is sustained by its shank and by contact with the walls defning the recess-in the head. There is space left at 15 around the upper reduced end of the shank of the hanger, and into this space lubricant is fed throughl a port 16 formed through the screw threaded shank of the head, and this port connects with anysuitable conduit-leading from a reservoir through a .part or member, such as a reamer cutter supporting block, with which the said shank connects.J
This lubricant is led lfrom thechamber 15 through conduit 1 7 in the shank of the hanger to the lower' part of the hanger where it connects with a cross conduit 18 leading at,y an angle through the journal studs and/"to the interior of .a bushing 19 interposed between theJ journal stud and the cutter. This conduit may extend otherwise than at the angle shown. The bushing 19 has a recess 20 forming an oil pocket from which the oil passes through ports 21 to the cutter bearing surface.
The bushing is notched at 22 and this engages a pin 23 extending down from the.
journal pin. This will hold the bushing against turning.
Collars 23 are interposed between the cutters and the hanger and these collars are notched at 24 to engage pins 25 on the hanger.
The water for ushing passes through the ports 26 to the recess of the head for flushing the cutters. i
The lower part of the hanger divides the recessof the head into two chambers in each of which one of the cutters is located, and the water ducts deliver water to the chambers.
As will be seen by an inspection of the cross sectional plan view of the head the hanger braces the walls oi the head in two ways against the crushing strains to which the said walls, defining the recess, are subjected.
In one direction, the hanger by its lower portion in the form of a thick fiat plate bears at its side edges at l against the wall of the head and sustains the lateral thrust here, and as its integral journal pins or studs bear against the inner walls of the head at the points 7'a any lateral inward thrusts or crushing strains against the walls are sustained here and as these two sets of surfaces are at right angle-s to each other the recessed head is effectively braced by the cutter hanger member. i
The hanger member with its integral journal studs and its shank provides a unitary member.
These studs are offset in relation to each other and their bracing effect takes place at those portions of the wall of the head adjacent the mouths ofiithe openings, in which the cutters are located. g
It will be noted that the structure is free from screw threaded journals or other like parts and that the assembly can be quickly made. fThe cutters can be simply slipped onto their journal pins together with their Washers and bushings and then the whole cutter organization is simply slipped into place within the recess of tl1e"\hea-d. No special fastening devices for the cutters is necessary and theyy can be quickly replaced when the hanger is removed by simply slippingthe used one off and the new one onto the journal pin after the hanger is removed from the head.
The headed journal pins also serve to re- Sist outward stresses to which the jaws 1 1 may be subjected s o that the lower part of the hanger acts as a tie piece between these jaws.
Contributing to the bracing eiect too is the bushing andcollar arrangement of the cutter organization, wherein the bushing bears on the collars and the collars in turn bear on the central plate portion of the hanger and on the inner sides of the jaws of the head.
It will be observed also that the plate portion of the hangers is arranged centrally of the head, and that the openings for the protrusion of the cutters are arranged offset in relation to each other andV on opposite sides of the plate. The rotary cutters have toothed cutting edges.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination, a deep well drill head having a recess in its lower face, and a hollow shank for attachment to the part from which it is suspended, a hanger having a shank extending up through the shank of the head and `hav-ing a nut at its upper end bearing on the top of the shank of the head and cutters carried by the. hanger and protruding beyond the head, substantially as having a recess in itslower face, and a hollow shank for attachment to the part from which it is suspended, a hanger having a shank extending up through the shank of the head and having a nut at its upper end bearing on the top of the shank of the head and cutters carried by the hanger and protruding beyond the head, a lubricator supply port extending through the shank of the head to lead oil, to the bore in. which the shank of the hanger is located, said hanger having a conduit communicating with the bore of said Vdrill head shank to lead the lubricant to the bearings of the cutters, substantially as described.
3. In combination, a deep well drill'head having a recess-in its lowerface with notdhes in its side walls opening `downwardly andhaving a vertical bore, ,cutters in the recess, a hanger for the cutters having ashank held in the bore of the head, and having journal means lying on itsv opposite Sides and fitting in the downwardly lopen Vnotches of the walls' of the head and rbtary cutters on the said journal means, substantially as described.,
4. In combination, a dee well drilling head having a recess in its ower face with carried thereby, cutters on said journal means, said journal means fitting in then downwardly open notches, substantially as described.
5. In combination, a deep well drillingAl head having a recess in itsl lower face and iaq having downwardly open notches in its walls, a hanger in the recess comprising a plate extending across the recess, said hanger having a shank retained in the head, and having also journal means on its opposite sides with cutters thereon and bushings -on the journal means and within the cutters serving to brace the substantially opposite parts of the wall of the head from the central hanger, said journal means engaging the downwardly opening notches, substantially as described.
6. In combination, a deep well'drilling head having a recess in its lower face and having downwardly open notches in its walls, a hanger in the recess comprising a plate extending across the recess, said hanger having a shank retained in the head, and having also journal means on its opposite sides with cutters thereon, collars on the journal means and bushings within the cutters serving to brace the substantially opposite parts of the wall of the head from the central hanger, said journal means engaging the downwardly opening notches, substantially as described.
7. In combination with a deep well drill head having a recess in its lower face and lateral openings through its wall, forming jaws, a hanger -consisting of a plate extending from jaw to jaw and bearing on the inner surface thereof adjacent said openings, said hanger having journal pins o'set in relation to each other and extending from opposite sides of the plate, said journal pins bearing at their ends upon the inner sides of the jaws ofthe head, and having reduced extensions bearing in notches in the head and roller cutters on the journal pins protruding through said lateral openings.

In combination, a deep well drilling head recessed in its lower face and having lateral openings oifsetin relation'to each` other for the protl'usion of cutters and forming jaws, a hanger in the form o f a plate arranged centrally 'of the recess and bearing on the opposite parts of the wall of the said recessed head and adjacent said lateral openings and carrying journals for rotary cutters on each side of' the plate, rotary cutters mounted on said journals, the jaws of the head being braced through the intermediary of the said hanger, Ysubstantially a i described.
9. In combination, a deep well drilling head having a recess in its lower face with downwardly opening notches in its side walls, said head having a shank with a vertical bore, a hanger having a shank held in said vertical bore and a plate portion extending across the recess, said plate portion having journal means lying on opposite sides thereof and carried thereby, cutters on said journal means, extensions of said journal means fitting in the downwardly open notches, and having heads countersunk in the outer walls of the jaws whereby said jaws are tied together, substantially as described.
10. In combination, a deep well drill head having a recess in its lower face and lateral openings for the protrusion of rotary cutters, a hanger consisting of a plate having offset integral journal pins, one on each side thereof, a rotary cutter on each pin between the plate of the hanger and the jaw of the head, said journal pins fitting in notches inv Ithe jaws of the head, substantially as described.

In combination, a deep well drill head having a recess at its lower face and lateral openings offset in relation to each other, a hanger plate arranged centrally of the recess and bearing on the inner wall of the head adjacent said openings, said han er plate having journals on its opposite si es oliset in relation to each other, bushings on the journal pins serving t'o brace the walls of the recess, rotary cutters on the bushings,

In combination, a deep well drill head I having a recess at its lower face and lateral openings offset in relation to each other, a hanger plate arranged centrally of the recess and bearing on the inner wall of the head adjacent said openings, said hanger plate having journals on its o posite sides offset in relation to each other, ushings and washers on the journal pins serving to brace the walls of therecess, rotary cutters on the bushings, said journal pins ing seated in notches in the wall of the head.
13. In combination, a deep well drill head having a recess in its vlower face, and having a bore, a hanger having a shank. held removably in the bore of the head, and having also a portion extending across .the` recess of the head, journal means carried by said hanger and rotary r`cutters on said journal means and at opposite sides of said hanger, said head having downwardly opening notches in its wall receivingt e said 'journal means, substantially Vas `described.

16. In combination in a deep Well drilling apparatus, a head having a recess in its lower end, with downwardly open notches in its walls, a hanger suspended in the head and having a strut portion extending across the recess, and a rotary cutter organization supported by said strut portion and serving to brace the Walls of the recess in a plane at right angles to the strut, said cutter organization having journal extensions projecting into the open notches, substantially as described.
