To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS J STALLINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Efngham, in the county of Effingham and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pliers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,` and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention has relation to pliers and is designed as an improvement on the tool for which on the 18th day of December, 1917, Letters Patent of the United States were granted me, No. 1,250,690, and has for its primary object to improve the general structure whereby the jaws have a greater amplitude of movement and the handles are adapted to come close together and are straight so that the tool may be readily introduced into the pocket and withdrawn therefrom without tearing or otherwise injuring the fabric or material thereof.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application,
Figure 1 is a side view of a tool embodying the invention, the jaws being open to their full extent,
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, the jaws being closed,
Figure 3 is an edge view of the tool, the parts being in the position shown in Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several viewsof the drawings by like reference characters.
The tool comprises complemental members 1 and 2 which cross near one end and are connected at the point of crossing by means of a pivot', the ends beyond the pivot forming jaws 4 and 5. The members 1 and 2 are pivotally connected in the usual manner in the formation of pliers and analogous tools, the jaws being offset and the members widened at their point of crossing. A third jaw 6 is disposed intermediate the jaws 4 and 5 and at the inner end or base thereof so as to move outward as the jaws are closed. The third jaw 6 has a stem 7 which is slidably mounted between the overlapping portions of the members 1 and 2, a longitudinal slot 8 being formed in the stem to receive the pivot 3. Lugs 9 project laterally from the inner or rear end of the. stem 7 and enter slots 10 formed in arms 11 projecting inwardly from the respective members 1 and 2. The arms 11 are formed with the respective members as a part thereof and are inclined thereto. The arms 11 are of such length as to admit of the jaws 4 and 5 opening to an extent to receive a rela` tively large object therebetween so that the tool is capable of gripping a wide range of articles. When the jaws 4 and 5 are closed, the intermediate jaw 6 is moved outwardly to its limit and the. handle portions of the members 1 and 2 come close together, whereby the tool may be readily introduced into a pocket or removed therefrom without causing injury to the fabric thereof. It is also observed that the outer ends of the arms 11 overlap the outer sides of the respective members 1 and 2 and in order to provide clearance said members are cut away upon their outer sides as indicated at 12. The arms 11 incline outwardly and rearwardly and the lugs 9 entering the slots 10 thereof effect a longitudinal movement of the jaw 6 as the members 1 and 2 turn upon the pivot connection 3.I As the jaws 4 and 5 open, the jaw 6 moves inward. Upon closing ofthe jaws 4 and 5, the jaw 6 correspondingly moves outwardly, the work or object being gripped securely between the three jaws 4, 5 and 6.
What is claimed is:
