' anam- PERCY YORK, or DULUTH, MINNESOTA.
UNIVERSAL-JOINT WRENCH.
Application filed June 9,
r T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERCY YORK, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, and a resident of Duluth, county of St. Louis, State of Minnesota, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Universal-Joint Wrenches, of which the following is a specification. c
This invention relates to wrenches of the kind in which a universal joint is employed to permit rotation of the handle of the wrench about an axis extending at an angle to the axis of the nut or bolt to be turned, thus adapting the wrench for use in situations where an ordinary wrench could not be employed, or in places where it would be inconvenient and difficult to use an ordinary wrench.
Generally stated, the object of the inven tion is to provide an improved construction arrangement whereby a wrench of the foregoing general character may be employed with either a single or a double universal joint assembly, and whereby the single assembly forms a part of the double assembly, thus obviating the necessity of having more than two universal joints for the complete wrench or outfit.
It is also an object to provide certain de tails and features of construction and combinations tending to increase the general eificiency and the desirability of the universal joint wrench of this particular character.
To these and other useful ends the invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench embodying the principles of the invention, showing portions of the handle broken away for convenience of illustration.
Figure 2 is a similar view of another side of the universal joint assembly shown in Figure 1, with the greater portion of the handle broken awav or omitted.
Figure 3 is a transverse section on line 3-3 in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a transverse section on line 4-4 in Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the universal joint assembly which is employed when two joints are desired, but which is omitted when only a single joint assembly is required.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the double universal joint assembly.
Serial No. 476,347.
As thus illustrated, the invention comprises a rod 1 having a handle 2 for the rotation of the wrench, the other end of said rod being provided with a polygonalend portion 3 for insertion in the fork 4 of the universal joint assembly. A block 5 is pivoted within the fork 4, by pivot pin 6, and a socket 7 is pivoted on said block by means of another pin 8, the two pins being close together and disposed at right angles to each other. The opposite ends of the assembly are fiat and extend for the full crosssectional area of the cylindrical universal joint assembly, one end having a square socket 9 for the end portion 3 and the other end of the assembly having a hexagonal cavity 10 to engage a nut or the head of a bolt. A set screw 11 is inserted through the cylindrical side of the fork 4: to engage the portion 3, so that the rod 1 is removable from the assembly.
As shown in Figures 5 and 6, the fork 12 has a socket to engage the portion 31, and has a pivoted block 13 held in place by pivot pin 14, while a second fork 15 is secured by a pin 16 on said block, the two pins being close together and at right angles to each other. A polygonal shank 17 forms a reduced extension of the fork 15, and the entire universal joint assembly thus provided is cylindrical in general form, except for the shank 17, and the latter and the portion 3 are exactly the same in form and size. Hence, as is obvious, the shank 17 willfit the socket 9 previously mentioned, whereby the two universal joint assemblies can be combined as shown in Figure 6 when such is necessary or desirable. A set screw 18 is inserted throu h the fork 12 to engage the portion 3.
of the rod.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a wrench, a handle rod, a universal joint removably secured on said rod at one end shank disposed in alinement with said rod, and a second universal joint having one. end thereof removably secured on said shank in engagement with said other joint and provided at its other end with a socket to en- 105 gage a nut ora bolt head, said shank and the end portion of said rod being of the same size and shape to permit either the rod or the shank to be inserted directly in the second joint, this second joint having a 110 socket formed to fit either the rod or the shank, whereby the two joints are usable and provided at its other end with a together in combination with said rod, or singly with said rod.
2. A structure as specified in claim 1, said rod and shank being polygonal in cross section, and each universal joint having a polygonal socket to fit either the rod or the shank, in combination With set screws inserted through the universal joints to engage the rod and the shank.
3. A. structure as specified in claim 1 the 10 two universal joints directly engaging each other, and each joint comprising a block having ivots disposed at right angles to each other, with the point of engagement between the two joints located between said 15 block.
